xantia hand brake issue

Post by aerodynamica »

It turns out that the hand brake caliper mech is seized and as a result the return spring is no longer man enough to cope. The brake now sticks despite now being freed off. I'd like to restore the spring effect but wager that it can't be bought separate tho I will investigate.

Any tips? The mot is in a few weeks.

Also the rh cable is routed wrong but can sort at the time.

Graeme,

When you say hand brake caliper is seized, do you mean the where the cable fits onto the brake caliper itself.

Graeme,

See attached photo and confirm if it is the 'hook' which the cable goes into.

It's the lever-actuator that the cable end locates in. It sticks terribly and has been since before I bought it last August. Now the thing is freed off but the spring has lost its tension. Sorry, couldn't view the picture.

So if you disconnect the cable and use some grips to move the lever the cable end sits in, it sticks wherever you set it?

It sticks anywhere from half way to rest position. It's freed off now but the spring is duff but it will return the lever from fully applied to about 4mm off. Needs grips to pull it further and so leaves the cable end slack when handbrake released.

Did you check the condition and amount of the grease under the big black rubber protector cap?
It is fixed with a cable tier. Cut the cable tier and lift up the cap. Clean the remaining grease.
There might be some rust if water or humidity has gone through. The spring will be seen
and check the condition of it. It should move easily by moving the lever by hand.
After cleaning, fill with new grease.

Edit: and a pic where the rubber cap is seen. :)

Similar handbrake arrangement on the XM.
Temporary fix for same handbrake cable problem was to fit the cable end through a long strong return spring.

Thanks guys, yes I've had the rubber cap off. It has been plus gassed to free off but needs packed with new grease.

The extra spring idea; is it a coil spring fitted between the lever and cable stop like on a CX? Cable travels through the spring?

i had the same problem, pull cable out get some pliers on the hook and move it back and forward a lot that should un-seize it, if not get on ebay there are some caliper repair kits on there, if not a second hand break caliper, should get one for under £35 easy to fit and bleed
