Where do I find the LHM pump on the Xantia?

Post by Napoleon »

I know from experience that looking to identify a particular component from the Haynes' BOL is next to impossible, and so it is true again this time...

I have been told that the 'LHM pump' is leaking on the Xantia, but am clueless to even know where to start to find it - and to assess if it is something I might replace/repair myself.

Short of crawling under the car to look for what I think might be the mysterious pump, could anyone be so kind as to tell me first?

And, please, should I even be thinking of repair or replace myself, and should it go to the garage? I'm told there is a slight leak, resulting in the LHM going a little low and bringing on the STOP light intermittently.

Thanks...

Depends if it has an aircon or not. On an aircon cars the pump is high and proud just above the alternator and very obvious. Invariably they’re black and have one thick rubber pipe going in and two steel pipes coming out.

On non aircon cars they are normally mounted right below the alternator and quite effectively hide...

Leaks are common and normally it's caused by one easily replaceable O ring...

UNLESS the pump has been ran for too long with a manualy OVER tightly adjusted Aux belt, in which case the Pump Front Bearing Seal wears and leaks...

Being a 95 SX, its likly NOT to have air con, so the pump will be just above the oil sump.. Get the car up on some ramps, and look up at the DRIVERS side of the engine.. The pump will be there, driven by a Flat 6 ridge wide belt...

Off to have a peek, but have no ramps, so may not draw many conclusions, but looks like I'm on the way there, thanks.

Correct, no aircon.

This is the best I could do in the limited circumstances...

I guess that greasy nut/union/join is the leaky bit?

Yup, can't remember the part number but they're less than a quid. Get 2 o-rings.
Unscrew the pipe nut and manoeuvre the pipe out the way, you may need to remove a few P clips along it's length.
Unscrew the large hex being careful not to lose the uncompressed spring inside.
Replace the o-ring on the hex and refit along with the pipe.
Further around the pump is a blanked off hex (used for when the pump is in a different position) remove that and replace the o-ring (remembering not to lose the spring).
The other place it can leak from is the bell end joint, this can be removed by unscrewing the bolts through the pulley, but pull the bell end off rather than the bolts out.

Thats the offender.

Undo the 12mm union on the pipe, then under that its a 17mm hex head ; CAUTION.. Under that, theres a spring and plate. Be VERY carefull removing the "adapter" NOT to loose the spring or plate, or else the pump wont work again!

The seal sits on the "Adapter" roll the old one off over the threads, roll the new one on.

Replace the adapter DO NOT over tighten... replace the 12mm union.. again, do not over tighten...

Enjoy..

Hope I'm not biting off more Citroën than I can chew... these, 'P clips', what the heck is tat? Special tool time?

By the looks of that photo, that is a larger nut but so encrusted by grit etc. that it is almost indistinguishable from the 'stuff' around it?

How'm I to find the part number for the ring I need? To to GSF?

In the meantime, if I chose to de-gunk the engine bay - would that be a good idea? This is what it looks like now:

Image
DSC05110 by Tim Redberry,

There's a lot of gooey mess around the fuel pump as far as I can see. And it would surely hurt to degrease the rest?

And something else, I'm told that the cam belt was changed at 40K - the car now is 92k. Any action needed?

I have to say, to my untrained eye/experience, the car is a gem, since having the spheres changed, it's been a dream. I hadn't realsied how degraded the ride had become.

XUD cam belts are rated around 60-80k are they not... well, youve only done around 50k, so its NOT desperate.. Prehaps another 10k then think about changing it for piece of mind, though its reccomended to do the water pump the same time as the cam belt drives it too, and they useually leak after a new belt gets fitted....

P clips are just what hold the metal hydraulic pipes to the engine to stop them vibrating and eventually breaking, held in place by 10mm nut/bolt.

Being slightly infamous for a clean engine bay, try the following: brake cleaner for spot cleaning, and spray on/hose off solvent type degreaser for overall cleaning. Clean on a warm day, pat and blot dry after, then go for a drive to really get some heat in there and dry out the connectors.
