It looks like the strut return pipe, you might be lucky and still have enough slack to remove the stub on the metal pipe then push the rubber pipe back on alternatively I believe GSF sell replacements for something like £30ish.

Provided you keep an eye on the LHM level the car is driveable locally although it'll be make a bit of a mess dripping and motorcyclists won't like you.

Yes, I agree. Not too disastrous to put right. Good luck on all fronts, if you get my gist

Just before we tell you how to top up/check your hydraulic fluid level please confirm exactly what car this is please!

Hope this is the extent of the 'bunny boiling' antics and there'll be no more....

I shouldn't be this ignorant, but am... do only Xantias sink to the floor? Are they the only Citroens that are called, 'sinkers'?

CX, GS, BX, Xantia, XM, C5 & C6 all will sink to the floor if put in 'Low'.
The first five will sink anyway, depending on year/model of Xantia and XM.

So I've got a 'sinker''?

Clearly rhetorical.

There were two types of Xantia and XM; the early ones were termed sinkers because they were not fitted with anti-sink valves. This happened some time around 1994 for the Xantia but I'm not sure for the XM.

'Sinker' Xantias can usually be recognised by the chevrons being on the bonnet, the hydraulic pump having only one steel outlet pipe and an absence of a rear so-called anti-sink sphere in the middle of the subframe just ahead of the spare wheel. Chevrons on the bonnet is not a sure sign but the other two are positives.

All Hydraulic Citroens will sink over time, the anti-sinks do take considerably longer to do so. In the case of a good 'un - months.

Sinkers will usually sink right to their haunches overnight...

No chevrons on this bonnet (1995), and no idea of a steel outlet or absence of rear so-called anti-sink.

I can only remember once, many, many, many years ago , long b4 I owned a Xantia, seeing one REALLY low on the ground - guess this was a true 'sinker'. Looked awesome. I should have known back then to go and buy one.

FWIW: just had her back from the garage (today, 29/3/2012) with new spheres... my God, what a difference! I can lean on any corner of her and she justs gives way and then back again. In three years of owning her, I have not known this phenomena. I guess I digress...
