Xantia HDi noise under acceleration

Post by Synth1983 »

Sorry, another question I'm afraid!

My new Xantia makes a bit of a rattle under acceleration then once over 3k it stops. I've read various things ranging from it just being something the HDi does, through to worn injectors. My old Xantia HDi didn't do this at all which makes me wonder whether it could be the latter. I'm guessing replacing injectors is an expensive affair and not really one I would like to contemplate on a relatively cheap car. On the other hand the noise is bugging me a bit and ideally I'd like it sorted. Any suggestions most welcomed!

Injectors are the most likely cause, they leak internally and this upsets the injection timing but unless its very bad I wouldn't worry about it. There are quite a few secondhand ones on ebay for not a lot of money.

Annoying more then anything.. I wouldn't bother.. The HDi injectors are a Two Stage injector, which is cut off after 3k revs.. the idea of two stage is to smooth out idle, by injecting a small amount in the first stage near TDC, then injecting the full amount in the second stage..

Mine has ALWAYS done it, for the last 45k.. I just turn the radio up... she still gives me 43mpg avereage, with a tuning box fitted too...

Buying some off ebay is ALSO a tricky thing, you cannot tell externally what condition they are in.. The safest way would be to get another set assumed buggered, and send them for refurb, but be warned... They ARE expensive to do.. IM sure (but not positive)

Thanks for the advice!

I still have my old Xantia which doesn't do this, would it be worth swapping the injectors over or would that be asking for trouble? The new Xantia is much better in every way than the other one but I know the noise will annoy me, even if I can't hear it I know it's there!

Found a good 'what could be causing my diesel problem' here while looking for injector prices http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-engine-smoke.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A good writeup but no prices, need to fill in a form to ask for them, may do that sometime but I prefer a price up front.
