Fitting a Xantia steering wheel
Just a word of warning, when the haynes manual says to only use approximately 25 lb ft of torque when tightening the Xantia steering wheel nut (or torx bolt on s2 cars), listen to them. I just tightened mine on using a small ish socket wrench and heard a cracking sound, obviously I provided a bit more torque than I was meant to and it has cracked the steering wheel spline, so rather than being an O shape its now a ( ) !
That'll be a trip to the scrappers tomorrow then for a replacement before work.. There's a Xantia V6 ( ) in my local one, I've been nabbing all sorts off it. Just need the electrovalves and I'll be happy it's stripped of most good bits, barring the engine and gearbox.
Edit - I should probably provide a bit more info here about the failure, the spline the wheel goes onto is tapered, and is obviously (always is obvious afterwards isn't it!) designed to be a snug fit after only 25 lb ft of torque, going too mad on it forces the spline on the wheel to open and fail as mine has. DOH!!

I NEVER listen to the haynes.. its full of bull... I use my common sense.. and tighten it just so the wheel doesn rock anymore.. Its a lock nut so shouldnt undo by itself..

In this case folks it seems the Haynes manual was right and I was wrong, I know it's unusual for that to be the case

I can't remember if the ribbon separates, don't suppose you have a leather mk1 wheel do you to swap?

Re: Fitting a Xantia steering wheel
Just remember that the MK1 wheel changed in 96/97 when the airbag ECU moved from the steering wheel to the console. The early ones have the airbag warning light on the steering wheel, the later ones on the dashboard. I have been looking for a good late MK1 leather wheel for a while...Dommo wrote:I can't remember if the ribbon separates, don't suppose you have a leather mk1 wheel do you to swap?

Re: Fitting a Xantia steering wheel
hi Dom, dont worry, you would have been pushed for time..
the slip ring has 2 plugs at the wheel (one for airbag, one for stereo controls etc) and 2 other end.. down by lower column.. but the upper and lower column shrouds have to come off.
the buttons and their ribbon are all one, and can be tricky to get out of the wheel without breaking the cable.. right now the buttons are more important than the slip ring
anyway, hope you got the wheel off ok

Re: Fitting a Xantia steering wheel
I have the slip ring jgra. Pm me regarding postage and such! It's a hydractive slip ring you realise?
Unfortunately my broken mk1 wheel WAS a good late leather one
Anyway, my car is now sporting a mark 2 wheel, glad its sorted.
Cheers.

Thanks for the warning - would never have occurred to me that the spline could split. Glad you've sorted itDommo wrote:Just a word of warning

S2 wheel on an S1 car, so you have an EXTRA horn button now, as in the Air Bag...Dommo wrote:I have the slip ring jgra. Pm me regarding postage and such! It's a hydractive slip ring you realise?

I have a collection of S2 XM (so S1 Xantia) leather steering wheels in the shed, need to go through them and sort them out, and see whats what... However, Im not sure if air Bag check light is on the wheel, or on the dash. IIRC Early S2 XM's are on the wheel like the Early Xantias..
John,
Ive had a WHOLE S2 HDi Xantia in for breaking due to 285k and a blown gasket between the water and oilway... The car IS complete.. ready for me to start on..
I can check the wheel controls for you if you like!
