C5 2.0hdi 110 broken cam followers

Post by bigbrother3269 »

Help!!-during a cambelt/tensioner change this morning someone forgot(!) to remove the locking pin in the cam pulley and tried to turn the engine on the starter....result is 5 broken cam followers(rockers).
Has anyone had this situation occur before?-or low spead cam belt break-i'm trying to find out if there is any liklyhood of piston/valve contact, autodata lists it as an interfearance engine but as it technically wasn't turning at the time i'm hoping and praying someone will give me some good news before i start stripping it any further.-its a 2004 model.

Weve had low speed cambelt failure before and it seems its just the followers that go. we just replace them and the engine runs. the problem you have is that the followers have roller/neddle bearings that contaminate the engine when they go. so we take the sump off and give it a good clean also the camshaft out and use a magnet to get as many as we can out and use a magnetic pick up tool to get down every hole you can see. then once youve put your sump on make sure you put a magnet on your sump plug in the hope that you catch any bits youve mised. just for reasurance we change the oil again after a few hundred miles to see if the sump magnet has caught any

Hi there.

Same engine as Xantia HDi.. Ive had a car in with a broken cam belt at 40mph!!!

Result? As yours broken rockers.. this IS the result of Valves to Piston contact.. however, the rockers are designed to break. I re fitted a set of rocker fingers from a spare head, re fitted the cam (Best remove the Cam shaft for best work!) Use one of those strong mechanic magnets to clear all the roller pins out the head...

Rocker fingers include the roller bearings.. Anyway. I fitted them all back on, set the car all back up and she ran on to do another 40k... Head gasket has killed her now but she still runs sweet as a nut.

I HAVE noticed though, the engine has suffered from a tiny tap ever since. This was a 40mph break though, yours at start motor speed could have fared much better...

I've seen quite a few 2.0 8v HDi's breaking timing belts & i'v never seen one bend a valve yet, As already said spend a while with a magnet getting all the needle rollers out. I've never went as far as taking the sump off though & never had any problems.

Well no 5 is alive!!,just to report that having put in the replacement rockers and re-timing(making a usefull tool for the tensioner out off a long reach allen key and the angle grinder) it fired up first turn, cleaned out the bits and did an oil change, just come back from an hours test run and all appears ok.So thanks to all those that replied with your input-still cant believe i left the timing pin in in the first place-1st time in 25yrs....good job citroen thought this might happen and made them rollers a weak point in the first place!

The HDi engine was a replacment for the 12v 2.1 TD engine found in the Citroen XM and later Xantias.. hence the sillimar design idea.

The older XUD engine which was cam directly over valve design was a 70's design, debuting in the 1979 Talbot Horizon (Remember those) - seriously, the same engine right up to 1998.. Having said that the DW8 is a Cam over valve design so no doubt would suffer the same.

The point I was gonna try and make was I think the "Newer" age designs were done this way to reduce costs in the event of a belt breakage, which is being prooved.

That's a wonderful word Paul. Should be adopted into the OED as an anti-oxymoron :)

Well, it has to be said there's been a lot of sillimar design ideas over the years, especially at the hands of the French car makers...

When A DW8 breaks the timing belt it usually breaks the camshaft & the carrier caps aswell.

and if you read my post thats what i have said.. its a cam over valve design identical to the xud.. so it will...

im sure someone on here has fitted an xud head on a dw8 block or vice versa... an dw8 head on an xud block and it worked with a small mod some where.. cant remember what now.. the best bit of the dw8 is the heater plugs are not below the injectors but above them making them 500% easyer to get at and remove....

Even if any rocker rollers found their way into the sump it's unlikely they would cause a problem as the gauze on the oil pump pick up would prevent them passing. Almost certainly they would just lie harmlessly on the bottom of the sump.

PS, memo to self, MUST do cambelt VERY soon !
