ZX 1.9D valve adjusting shims...
Are they still available? I presume they are a dealer part only. I have emailed a Citroen dealer in Somerset near where my brother lives (who can send them on to me) but haven't heard anything back yet - they are probably still laughing!
Apologies for the continuing stream of questions about my ZX, but it's the first time it's gone seriously wrong in the three years I've owned it - and it's a bit of a learning curve!

It was very hard to get shims even when ZX was still a current car, like most dealers, they will probably just not bother getting in touch again.
When we have an issue, I get mine remachined, as they usually need to be made smaller. Just calculate by how much, and most engineering co's can do this for a reasonable cost.

any good engine reconditioners will have a selection of shims they will probably sell you some,
or go to a breakers and whip a few cams off any car with an XUD lump so you can get a selection together for your self,

Re: ZX 1.9D valve adjusting shims...
When I had a BX head repaired after a camshaft failure I got the firm to do it for me. The problem is that they are not marked with the thickness so you have to mic them and as you don't know what sizes you will need until you do the job, rather than have to buy an assortment I let them do it.
If you could get a scrap head you would probably have enough of an assortment to do it yourself. Any XUD head should do.

Many thanks for the replies, folks.
I only have a problem with three inlets, two gaps being .229mm and the other being .305mm which is twice what it should be. Are these engines very sensitive to incorrect valve clearances?, because if all else fails, the original shims will have to go back until I can sort it out at a later date.

If it doesn't rattle I wouldn't worry about it. The usual problem is the clearances being to tight - that will cause lack of compression.

That's really not the correct answer Peter N, if he has the the thing stripped best do it right first time, 'near enough' is what caused the downfall of the UK car industry.

I thought the sizes were marked on the shims ?
Although I'd never trust any markings anyway and always measure them.

Re: ZX 1.9D valve adjusting shims...
The sizes may have been marked on the shim but if it was, it's no longer visible so don't know what it originally was.
I've miked them so know what sizes I need, but if they are NLA then as it was running OK (apart from the blowing head gasket that is) before I took the head off, I guess it should run OK with refitting the original shims. It's just that I would have liked to set it up properly, but don't have a problem with reusing the original bits.
When I head back to the UK I'll have to start whipping the cams off any XUD motors I come across to build up a stock of shims!

I didn't realise it was stripped, I thought he was trying to do it in situ - obviously didn't read the post properly, as usualGibbo2286 wrote:That's really not the correct answer Peter N, if he has the the thing stripped best do it right first time, 'near enough' is what caused the downfall of the UK car industry.

In wouldn't bother looking in a breakers for shims as most of the one's fitted to engines when new are around the same size, been there tried that.

I've got a few in my 'glory box' if you can wait for the post to arrive I'll send them to you but it'll be hit and miss if they are the correct size.

Thanks one and all for your replies: I have heard back from the dealer and they are going to check with Citroen if the shims are still available - watch this space!
