Thanks. Perhaps I'll get it then. If its a 1999 book its just a few months newer than the car and will definitely be for a Mk2 so it should be pretty close.
I ended up getting that manual from Ebay, it arrived quickly and in as new condition.

It's the full grey wallet with 3 books - UK map with dealer network, main car manual and radio manual. The radio manual is for a slightly later model so the buttons etc are different, although its still quite informative as to what the buttons like TA, RDS etc mean. The main car manual appears to be the correct one for the car as far as I can see.

So the owners manual is now present and accounted for :) (Yes I am a bit of a perfectionist, and like every thing to work and be there...)

I'm thinking of having a tinker with the alarm soon to see if I can sort out what is causing it to set itself off. The way I see it it can only be either the volumetric sensor (which I can determine by disabling it) or one of the door sensors, probably the boot sensor as the boot catch isn't adjusted properly.

I'd like to do some silent testing of the alarm, so is it possible to disable/disconnect the siren ? From what I've read the siren unit has its own internal battery which presumably sets off the siren if the cable to it (or the main battery) is disconnected while armed, however, can I simply unplug the siren while the alarm is NOT armed without setting it off, and then have an alarm which only silently flashes the lights when it goes off ? (If so which plug) Or will disconnecting the siren make the central locking system/alarm very unhappy ?

If I can disconnect the siren it would allow me to do some testing of the alarm fault without annoying the hell out of the neighbours :) And presuming I did find the fault and fix it, it would allow me to routinely arm the alarm when away from the car to test that it really is fixed also without annoying people - if it did go off in my absence I could still tell from the flashing light on the door. If it earned my trust after a few weeks I would then reconnect the siren!

Is there not still the siren disable switch under the bonnet. Mine was in front of the scuttle on the nearside, switched with the ignition key?

That was removed from around 95 onwards.

Re the alarm issue if you can get your car plugged into a Lexia it'll tell you the last 15 causes of setting the alarm off were plus you can see the locking state of each door/boot/bonnet switch, duff ultrasonic sensors are the most common cause followed by the boot lock switch.

Yep it's a 98 so I guess it doesn't have that switch.

Yeah I know that's possible with a lexia, but I don't have access to one so I'll just have to make do and troubleshoot the good old fashioned way  if I can disable the siren I'm sure I can test the various sensors... I might just try disconnecting it and see what happens.

The siren is a **** to disconnect. It's a bumper-off job Simon. It lives just in front of the washer bottle and is bolted to the chassis leg...

Hey gang, another minor crisis :(

I'm running low on petrol and about to head off for a day out in the nice weather with the other half, go to the petrol station to fill up and....

Can't get the petrol cap off. :?

I'm back home again and have been trying for 20 minutes to get it unscrewed without success, and I'm completely baffled. It's the locking type and if I turn the key clockwise the petrol cap is free to turn but just turns and turns without unscrewing, if I turn the key to the left then as soon as I turn the petrol cap a few degrees it locks solid in place with some sort of locking mechanism.

I've tried all sorts of in between angles as well. Back when it was working, I always turned the key to the left to get the cap to unscrew so I can't understand why now turning to the left is locking it.

HELP!! :x

As often happens I manage to fix something just after posting for help... I finally managed to get it off by gripping the cap with a pair of pliers and pulling outwards quite hard while turning it... obviously the bottom of the thread is stripped and I'll need a new petrol cap to stop it happening again...

The joys of 13 year old Citroen ownership... (None of our NZ Xantia's had a key locking fuel cap, instead they locked the hatch with a solenoid with the central locking...)

Same here Simon, sounds like your cap is an aftermarket jobbie.

My estate has a locking fuel cap - since it operates off the main key, I assume it is OE fit..... can't remember what the two hatchbacks had - that was nearly 5 years ago  It is just a 1/4 turn that operates lugs on the back, no thread involved.

Oddly, the back of the cap insert is green indicating unleaded, rather than diesel :?

It sounds like the locking solenoid has failed on yours and has been replaced by a locking cap.
A replacement solenoid and non-locking cap from a scrapyard may be an attractive alternative.

I think its more than failed, its missing in action

My previous Xantia had a solenoid mounted in the square hole to the left which poked out a pin to lock the flap. This one doesn't even look like it ever had a solenoid fitted ? :?

Not sure I understand what you're saying - do you mean somehow removing the lock from the cap itself ? I'd have to take it off again to be sure, but it didn't look like there was any easy way to remove the lock, and as far as I can tell the lock is not to blame, its the large plastic thread on the cap slightly stripped at the bottom...

Simon,

Yes, I was meaning the lock itself. The good news if your looking for a locking fuel cap, I have one in the garage and found the correct key for it too =D> .

It's yours if you want it
