Well, the head's off and it looks as if the gasket was leaking into the narrow waterway.
Does anyone know if this is likely to be just a one-off problem, or could there be a root cause which needs fixing before I screw it all back together?

I would have the head checked for flatness and machined if necessary, you can check it yourself with a good quality steel rule and feeler gauges. Warped heads are very common especially if it has been boiled.

It hasn't been boiled luckily enough, so I think it's a good clean up, check the head's flat then bolt it all together and keep my fingers crossed!
