Thats very interesting to note.

In addition, would a remap cause the MPG figure returned by the ECU to be incorrect?

Can't speak for your car but I've seen that happen on a vw. It was rectified by someone who was more skillful with the tuning gear. So i think the answer is depends on the competence of the tuner.

Seems very different to the early 2.0.Hdi C5, mine used to average about 50mpg with 60+ on a long motorway journey.

Was that on the 110 hp HDi by chance?

I've just done a 80 mile round trip, a good mix of A roads, town stop-start and a bit of dual carriageway, 44.5 MPG, 6.3 L/100KM.

It's troubling to think of economy getting worse with time...

Yes that was the 8 valve engine, virtually indestructible. I now have two Peugeot 406 estates with the same engine and they regularly do 60mpg+ on a long motorway journey, mind you I do drive a bit like the grandad I am, rarely over 60mpg or 2000 rpm.

Yeah, thought it might be, my dad had a 307 with that engine... fantastic motor, until the DMF disintegrated that was. There was also a lot of trouble with the DPF if i remember correctly, although it may have been because it was a relatively new thing at the time.

Have had three 406's, the first one still has the original clutch and DMF at 246k miles, unfortunately the interior got wet and permanently immobilised it, it's now my spare parts dept.

I have a 138hp auto, remapped to about 170 hp. and under normal conditions of driving I seem to average about 39 mpg.
Giving it a bit of welly will drop the consumption down to the low 30's.
The autobox has so far coped with the extra power quite happily, and the remap makes it a much nicer car to drive I find.

That's very interesting, who did your remap if you don't mind me asking? Does your trip computer report the MPG accurately? Did you keep the EGR and FAP?

Yeah the same Auto box is used on the V6 models so there's plenty of headroom power wise.

I'm slightly tempted by a remap as the later C5's had more power on the 2.0 engine and as has been mentioned previously, the C5 is a heavy car.

Remap was done by Celtic tuning.
EGR yes, as they don't normally give much trouble on this engine.
FAP deleted.
I haven't checked the consumption figures brim to brim, but a quick bit of mental arithmetic at the pump last night suggests they aren't far out at all.
Hope this helps.

Just had a read through Celtic tunings website and found the info quite confusing.
Was your car tuned on a dyno or did they download a standard map from their files?

Celtic tuning seem to offer quite a high remap, 185bhp! or there's an 'economy map' at 166bhp

Not sure why you need to ask for a quote though, a software upload should be fixed price!

Just on an aside - I'm surprised they haven't updated their website to remove the FAP and EGR delete services as many other garages now have - as it is illegal to drive a vehicle with the system removed on UK road vehicles. I note they still offer it as a service, but only right at the end of the article do they say it is illegal! Most of these garages have now opted to offer FAP cleaning services instead as a proper alternative. Some of these rogue garages are not informing drivers of the illegality of driving on the roads with the systems removed and of invalidating their insurance... An interesting read here and I look forward to seeing what the new checks / changes in the MOT laws will be coming in 2017 /18:

(Note, the forum does not condone the practice of FAP / EGR removal, so please don't discuss practical removal advice on the forum)

The guy came out to my house in a very well equipped van.
The existing map was downloaded, then sent back to HQ.
About 20 minutes later a modified map was sent back to the technician, which was then loaded back onto the ECU.
As I said, it has made a very noticeable difference, and I have no complaints :-)

Personally, I wouldn't want to remove the FAP as it has done much to make diesels less antisocial... EGR I have less sympathy for what with the loss of exhaust gas that could be going to the turbo and the clogging of the inlet manifold along with the reduction in economy.

From my understanding, the EGR is required for the FAP to regen although this may be hearsay I'm not sure.

Interesting hearing about the VW scandal as their "fix" seems to be knackering the EGR valves on many people’s cars.... can we speculate that the 'defeat device' VW used basically kept the EGR shut permanently?
