Ok what are they?
I went for the 2.2 as I wanted an Exclusive with ESP & traction control and just liked the sound of having a larger engine. I went for manual for the mpg.
Main differences between the MK1 C5 2.0 & 2.2 Diesel engine?

Ones 2.0 l and ones 2.2 l
The 2.2 is 16V vs 8V for the 2.0, Other things it has the 2.0 doesn't: a balancer shaft somewhere, inlet swirl flaps, FAP, more power, higher consumption, less reliability. The 2.2s generally have more kit than the 2.0, eg a 2.2 SX has Hydractive 3+ rather than Hydractive 3 on 2.0 cars. You pay your money and take your choice etc....

Theres a few owners who love the 2.2 16v.. but it does have lots of niggles.. Lots of FAP problems if the system is not looked after.. Eyloys fluid needs to be kept topped up so theres another cost.. MPG useually around 40mpg.. Twin Cam, but the Cam belt drives ONE Cam the the other driven by a chain inside the cam cover..
Later 16v designs are much better and a lot less trouble, even the two litre version.
If and when you get an injector issue or need to remove the head which is a known thing, the manifold needs to come off, and there fore the injectors need to come out, IF you can get them out.. It may be practice to try now, get them out, replace the copper fire seals and fit new plastic sleeves.. If left and you have signs of "Charcoal Rocks" around the injectors this is a sign they have gone and you may have a job ahead. I beleve its a bit easyer to remove them out a HOT engine.
Id go for the 8v ANYDAY and all day long, even in the C5 they will do 45mpg.. No FAP, dam sight more reliable and a bit simpler to work on.

Fuel consumption, particularly automatics and slightly higher maintenance costs, due to the cost of Eolys for the FAP. Both seem to have their share of MAF problems and the 2.2 uses more vacuum driven equipment around the engine which can suffer from leaks on older cars but are easily and cheaply rectified.

Re: Main differences between the MK1 C5 2.0 & 2.2 Diesel eng
If someone wants the most reliable diesel C5 then without a shadow of a doubt it is the 2.0HDi 110 8v. Its very well proven and even in the C5 it performs ok. The only slight downside to a 110 2.0HDi 8v in a C5 compared to a Xantia (or 406 I think) is it has a dual mass flywheel, as do all C5 diesels and most modern diesel cars actually.
However on the 8vHDi this is not a problem should it fail, as a solid flywheel and clutch kit can be fitted and is a proven conversion. Our 8v HDi C5 has a solid flywheel, it has done many more miles on this clutch than its original DMF clutch. What with it having the best engine, no DMF and a excellent history I have no doubt that our C5s engine will go on almost forever. Currently on 138K and no issues to report, averages about 43-44MPG - driven hard!
The 2.2 136 16v is perhaps the least reliable, thats not to say it isnt reliable! The 1.6 and later 2.0HDi 16v seem to suffer less problems, return much improved economy than either the 2.2 or the 2.0 8v and perform very nicely.

The only thing I would add to the above is that the 2.2 costs more to Tax than the 2.0 because it's in the higher emissions band.
Nice cars.

Oh well my 2.2 seems to be doing ok so far, do 38 miles a day and now on 79k with no pollution faults, fluid last topped up at 50k.
Never really did any homework before buying my C5, I just liked the idea of the larger engine (never had a diesel) and wanted the kit of the exclusive like traction, esp, xexons bla bla bla.
