Strange Noise

Post by CITMAN »

My 95 ZX 1.4 with 80000 miles has been making a strange noise on overun only around the 2500 to 3000 rpm range in all gears 1st 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th when cruising on overun. but there is no noise when the car is driven i.e. not on overun. The car been like this for year now. The noise is difficult to discribe but it sort of like a rough pulsating noise. it doesnt have any gearbox oil leaks abd had a new clutch a year ago so i hope the box oil is ok.
Any ideas

just been round the block and noticed that engine seems to pop back through the exhaust i.e. back pressure and seems this is also noticable between 2500 and 3500 rpm on overun do you think this is causing this strange noise.

Far be it for me to try & frighten the living daylights out of you, but strange gearbox noises always make me nervous.
The fact that it had a clutch a year ago is one real good reason to check the gearbox oil.
A few years ago, I took my car to a "specialist" to have a service. A while later I noticed a bit of roughness (hardly noticeable) and a slight noise that sounded more annoying than potentially terminal and discovered that when the car was serviced, it had been drained but not refilled. I was lucky (if you could call it that) in that in the process of making sure he squeezed every last cent out of me, instead of draining the entire transmission as I had requested, that he only apparently drained from the upper of the 2 drain holes (the car was a CX) & as a result, about a teacup full of oil remained in the transmission. Naturally, he denied any responsibility & suggested that perhaps it leaked, even though there were no signs of leaks, and eventually said he couldn't explain apart from telling me that gear oil does evaporate. As I told him, this I believed; I also believe in the tooth fairy, easter bunny & santa claus!!![:D][:D]
I'd suggest to do a drain & refill regardless & check the grade of oil that is put in also.

when I check the box oil level can re use the copper washer. I thought it might be the gearbox. But was hoping this popping back through tailpipe at similar rpm would be the problem. Any ideas assuming the oil level okay how long the box would go on for.

on this score & allowing for it sounding in tandem to the original complaint; how are the engine & exhaust mounts?

Put it this way; I do.
In your case I'd say it's optional but you'd have easier access to one for a few pence than I would for several dollars.[:0]

I think one of engine mounts is proberly a bit tired becuase of the knocking noise I get when I let the clutch up everything else you mentioned is okay apart from the heat sheild on the cat which is loose. Its just the popping back noise through the tailpipe at similar rpm as ive said I was hoping this was it and not the box. ill check the oil at the weekend.

As regards the gearbox oil; I'd suggest changing it in any case because the strange things I've found in gearboxes would make your hair curl. I've seen & heard of some mechanics even running ATF in gearboxes. This will work on occasions until a wrong variety is put in with heavy friction enhancers, in there to make the bands "bite" harder and they suddenly wonder why the gear changes start to crunch.
I have used a gear oil additive in all my cars. The one I use is Nulon G-70 & find that unlike engine additives, these do seem to actually work without causing any long term damage. They will improve gearchanges and smoothness & remove a lot of strange noises. It seems the more I drive with this in my gearboxes the better they seem to get.
I don't know if you can buy Nulon over there, but any gearbox additive seems to help improve things; Nulon was my choice based on results a few of the Pug owners over here had.
As far as life expectancy goes; how long is a piece of string? If it's any consolation, Cits have never been sus in the gearbox hence they don't just cark out without adequate warning. My guess is that if you can put up with the bit of noise, it'll last as long as the rest of the car.

To put a picture on the forum :
1) first ensure the picture can be public accessed from a homepage.
A lot of the free mailservices on the web offers free storage space for such things.
2) next you type in here in the message box the complete URL stuff for your picture location - like http://etc.etc.etc
Enclose the URL with these 2 codes : img /img in square brackets.
I've noticed that it's necessary to insert a blank space between the code and the actual URL text.
You may get the img codes by clicking the small picture icon above this message box.
(the message box is where you type in text on this forum)
