Alarm is easy to reset!! If your plipper doesnt work simply leave your ignition key ON in position 2 i think to reset alarm.. Or.. Make sure the key is off.. Open the door. Connect battery up and then on the right side of the dash there is a button with a sounder shape with a cross on it.. Make sure its not your electric rear window switch cut off switch... Press and hold the sounder cancel switch and turn the ignition on to position 2.. The indicators should flash rapidly to indicate alarm reset.

Find the alarm cancel button first as you need to reset it within a minute after connecting the battery up

Ah thanks for the tips. Plipper is unreliable so don't bother with it except in these situations! I've managed in the past but always put it down to fluke pressing that button, starting ignition, and that key slot in the engine bay bulkhead! So avoided doing it often!

It seems to start if i add a jump off another batt in the morning, and if the temperature is ok in the aft it will start normal. and if It's hot immediately after a long drive there will be no power for a restart. I'm thinking perhaps it's using one of the smaller earths rather than the main, so i need to get a new strap and get in deep with it this week.

I'm just looking at where i can get a earth cable from, and how long it needs to be? 24", 30" too long? Also the smaller cables coming off the original terminal, one goes to fuse area and another goes elsewhere, how to attach these when the new one only has one big cable going to wherever it goes...? gearbox case?
cheers

Earth leads are all have a Ring terminals on them... they goto two places, one to the earthing plate on the inner wing and others to the chassis UNDER the battery tray..
The one LARGE earth goes to the top of the gearbox which is main altinator and starter earth.

Was checking the battery recently and discovered the positive battery cable clamp is fractured right through top to bottom! It is therefore loose on the terminal. Amazing that it still allows the starter to work! Rather than replaced the cable, which I imagine wouldn't be fun, I'm going to cut the damaged clamp off ind fit a repair clamp.

A quick update. My '94 1.9d has been getting gradually worse. I replaced the negative terminal, it seemed to help, but still had to start with another battery or jump pack every morning and some nights. Also if it gets right up to temp bizarrely that still makes it very sluggish turn over like flat battery. I kept battery charging as often as poss but didn't make loads of difference. What really did it was the last frosty morning. It'd been minus figures for most of night and just wouldn't start with any battery Friday and Saturday morning, plans cancelled. Started later that day and the Sunday I fitted a positive terminal. It's better but still not right still needs a jump majority of mornings and still sluggish to restart when full temp/after a run. Suppose I should check or mess with starter terminals. Any other ideas? I'd pay to get a knowledgable type replace cables if that's what's needed...?

We had a similar issue with our ZX 1.9TD, the cable was actually still OK in that case but the P/O had overtightened the positive terminal clamp until it fractured so had to replace that. Interesting to read about the earth cables on 206's a couple of pages back, while there's no weird electrical issues our '02 1.4HDi does occasionally seem to crank a bit slow/take longer to start so will be checking the battery cables/clamps on that too. (I've heard these engines don't require, or even bother to use, their glowplugs until the ambient is well below freezing so I don't think it's plug related???)

Also my old 205 Junior 1.8D had a bad main earth, occasionally when hot, and you could see where the starter's current tried to re-route when it failed as the small wire to the fuel filter head/primer pump used to "twitch" and get hot when you turned the key! (scary!!!). In that instance a quick hammer blow to the bolt head on the gearbox used to sort things until I got round to remaking the connection.

I've done the old 3 cable upgrade on all my cars. Adding an extra cable to the 2 earth wires and the main positive, to the battery.
Seems to stop a lot of issues.

Can I ask where you managed to get a good one from? Pretty sure they are no longer available from Citroen or otherwise exhorbitant.

This sort of brass clamp (motor factors, Half**ds, etc.) does a good job
Battery clamp connector.JPG
and avoids the need for additional ring connectors.

OK Chris. Thanks for that. I'd love to source a genuine one as Sylv's is still totally original.

Have to keep my eye on the bay!

Might try soldering the clamp if only to fill the gap.

Since fitting those, and adding a second cable* between glow-plug relay and glow-plug 'rail', the 2.5TD now starts on a mere tweak of the key.

* Originally, our 1996 XM was fitted with a stout 4mm2 multistrand cable arriving the the GP relay main contacts (from Batt+), but only a single 2.5mm2 leaving it, and heading off to the GPs. What?? Earlier wiring diagrams show the diesel XM with twin (paralleled) cables on the output side. Bean counters at work?

On the basis that current capability out should equal current capability in, I ran a second black cable 2.5mm2 neatly alongside the solo one, with a soldered eye-terminal at each end.

Happy result was that total glow-plug current draw went up from 50A to 75A on my clamp-on d.c. ammeter, and starting has never been better.

Note sure whether Xantia might have been wired in the same way. Easy to tell if you look at the cable sizes on the H.D. terminals on the underside of the GP relay. Worth cleaning up those external contacts too.

An interesting post. I have just checked my new Xantia. Yep terminal on battery heats up enough to smoke when using starter. Just ordered a new one. Thanks.
By the way, which way does 'current' from the battery flow?
From positive to starter? Apologies if this has already been stated: slow brain/computer :-)
