The book recommends Total Quartz Diesel 7000 10W-40 or Total Quartz Diesel 9000 5W-40 or 5W-30 according to the local temperature.

I run mine on Drivetec 10W-40 semi synthetic from and recommended by my local factors, they're all synthetic or semi synthetic.

Total quartz 9000 5w-40 is the recommended, best place to get from is
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160647323468" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and filter
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270601790893" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The general consensus seems to be that its well worth changing the oil around 6-8k miles as well rather than the 12k? citroen recommend

I was thinking of buying a cheaper oil 10w40 which has ACEA A3/B3 specifications.

The total quartz recommended for xantia 99 2.0 hdi is B4.

Is it important to ensure the oil has b4 or even b3 will be fine?

Another thing. I have a large number of short journeys since my office is just 7 kms from home. I drive around 6000 miles a year.

I know that oil must be changed each 10000 miles. But is there a limitation on time also. I mean is it necessary to change oil every year or every 2 years irrespective of the miles?

I use Asda 10w40 in my Berlingo 2.0HDi. It's fine. It's actually Comma oil, as is Halfords own brand.

I used Asda 5W40 fully synthetic in my Xantia HDi, £20 for 5l.

I run mine on Comma 15/40 semi synthetic, about £13.00 from Trago Mills, it doesn't need to be low ash as it doesn't have a DPF.

So in short B3/B4 specs is not important for the hdi?

also how many months can i go between oil changes? for example if I do 10000 miles in 2 years, can i change oil once every 2 years?

You'd probably be perfectly safe doing just that, but I'd change it once a year, just for peace of mind. It only takes 10 mins on a Xantia to change the oil and filter.

It is also likely that the oil has been improved in the 10 plus years since the Xantia HDi engines came out.

Anything rated CF is fine. I change mine at about 6-8000 miles.

I have just double checked, and the Asda synthetic 5W40 meets the required standards (it is CF and A3/B3). Gracie is happy with that.

I was told that I MUST use fully synthetic low sulphur oil on my 2005 C5 1.6 HDi so I bought it from MicksGarage.com - about £26 for 5l. of Total Quartz INEO ECS. (Also bought a few quids worth of other stuff to get the bill up to £30 for free delivery.)
I find that I get a couple of extra mpg after changing. (about 30l. of diesel over 12000 miles!)

That's correct, but the 2.0 8v HDi is not as sensitive to using the wrong oil. A 10/40w semi synth or fully synth is fine for it as long as it meets the specs.
