Xantia Lower Steering Column Shroud Removal (R reg)

Post by gadgetgricey »

Had an hour spare, so thought I would try to install the "relay" repair to get the fan heater working on my Xantia again.

Well typical me, fallen at point 1 of the instructions. Remove the lower Shroud.

Got the two torx screws out and managed to seperate the section nearest the centre of the car, but cannot remove the bit by the ignition switch????

Feels as though there is a connection that runs between both sections, but no access holes to get at it?
Do I have to take the steering wheel off?

It may just pop off, but just feel that if I add any more levarage something is going to break???

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

S1's you need to remove the steering wheel, S2 should just come off with the screws removed IIRC

There's an invisible 'popper' on that side Dave. Secret is to gently lift the upper half up from the lower half (which must stay put for now) and it'll pop off.

Then when you look down where the popper is, you'll see a screw going downward that holds the lower half on. Remove this screw and the lower half will then come off.

Be gentle and don't try to lever anything with tools - just use fingers. I've seen plenty broken there...

If a MK1 the shrouds won't come off until the steering wheel is off.

Going to try and continue with this later, but just wanted to confirm something.

I'll remove the steering wheel and do the relay fix. If i then test this before putting the steering wheel back on, I'll get the airbag warning light, but can test the blower motor.

Is the airbag warning light now in the "system", or will it clear when i reconnect everything/the steering wheel.

((Just dont want to reconnect everything to find I've made a mistake on the relay somewhere))

Thanks again

Yes the airbag fault will clear itself when reconnected.

dave.. thats a very late s1 car you have there which may already have the modified cuircuit on her.. to be sure its the ignition switch is yur heated rear screen also NOT working???? if its only the blower id be checkinh the red plug on the blower motor itself.. they are a common weak point too... ignition switch failure useually always takes rear heated screen and blower...

Hi there Paul.
Fairly confident its the relay mod needed. Heated window "fails" at the same time.

I've also found a slightly iffy/dangerous work round, in that if its not working I keep the car in gear and briefly turn the engine off and back on again whilst travelling down a straight bit of road. Normally kicks it back into life.

Cheers

Must check out your guys relay mod, have done loads of these in the past, but cant see why you would want to take the column shroud off as its too tricky and not required.

Not entirely certain  , think about 167,000 but as you say she's been great and continues to perform faultlessly.

Feel a little guilty as may be selling her soon as got my eye on an Hdi, keep thinking am I doing the right thing (better the devil you know and all that).
But keen to experience the chipped Hdi 110 experiance :-D

Well if you remove the fuse box cover, which runs across the entire width of the drivers side, about 6 or 8 Torx 20 screws, the ignition switch wiring goes to 3 connectors, I think they are grey black and brown from memory, the brown one, definately brown wires, is the fan and hrw feed through the switch, just unplug it, and short the two wires together (this will confirm it is the two that are faulty) The fan will start working with the engine running.
These are the two wires that you need to connect too a relay to repair the fault. The relay can then be cable tied under the removed panel, no need to touch the column shroud.

well dave..thats what i did.. i had a faithfull td xantia and then decided to get a hdi.. i ended up with "xantics" silver exclusive hdi... and now i wont go back.. bought her on 159k "xantic" had no history.. and now at 199k ive done nothing to the engine after swapping cam belt water pump and crank pully... ive also got a tuning box fitted and you know dave.. it WILL make you smile!! truly awesome!!

im looking now for a Y plater in black in either sx or exclusive (MUST be a 110.. thats the only time now ill change this girl..

On the engine side, as long as you collect yourself a spare fuel tank lift pump, a cam sensor (Simply to change, one T10 torx screw) and a crank sensor, a common PSA item fitted to many, and possibly a fuel rail pressure sensor you cannot go wrong.. HOWEVER, Ive got none of those spare, and Ive done 40k in mine without a moments bother...

LOVE THEM

On the 110 HDi it's an absolute ***** to replace  It's nearly as inaccessible as on the V6...
