Feel like having a play

Post by mongoose100 »

Are the C5's Spheres the same thread as the likes of the Xantia?

If so, am I likely to kill something if I was to experiment with popping Xantia spheres on (assuming they fit)? The ride is rather hard in comparison to the Xant. Before coughing up hard earned $$ (spheres here in NZ are priced like slabs of gold), I'd like to be damn certain that its the spheres at fault and not something else!

Lexia says that the steering angle sensor is out of tolerence (or words to that effect). Does that mean that the ECU will be keeping the suspension in hard mode or is that one of those 'Phantom' faults?

Thanks all, hope the new year is treating you well...
Regan.

Yes C5 sphere's are the same thread as Xantia ones, obviously a pressure check is well worthwhile doing to be sure and also make sure that you have the correct ones fitted at the moment are there are different types, the tell tale is the pressure is stamped clearly on the top of the sphere.

Not sure about C5's but steering angle sensor faults are almost standard equipment when using Lexia on Xantia's, I'd clear the fault then keep an eye on what/how often it's recorded before taking the matter further.

Shouldn't be a problem as C5 spheres were fitted to late Xantias.
Jim has just taken one off his HDi.

Indeed and I reckon it was the original. I don't know for sure but if that was the case then the C5 spherews (saucers?) would appear to last better than the traditional ones. The one I fought to get off was jut ten bars below it's nominal. Not bad for 11 years and 201,000 miles...

Interesting information, I have long held the view that the C5 spheres don't go soft like the old ones, the C5 having a mylar rubber sandwich construction diaphragm, which should be pretty well impervious to any gas leakage, so if they are never loaded enough to get spiked then Citroens claim that they are good for the life of the car is probably close to the truth. Jims experience tends to confirm that.
However based upon some of the sphere related threads I have read here I do wonder if some of the aftermarket spheres i.e non Citroen are made to the same standard, after all it would be easy and probably cheaper to make a sphere with a straight rubber diaphragm and no spike which would loose gas just like the old ones and at the same rate.
A proper C5 sphere will only get a little bit soft before it goes solid as the diaphragm gets spiked and all the gas left goes in a rush.

Her indoors' C5 is still on it's original spheres after nearly 10 years and 170k miles, so maybe Citroen are right. Oh hang on, I've just tempted fate, haven't I?
