Happy Holidays to all!
Hello everyone.
Just sitting on the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone about to venture to 'the other side!'
Should be in Austria in 12-13 hours!
Have a great break to everyone and see you next year.

Happy Holidays to all!
Arrived safely at 22.02 Austrian time minus a number of gears but apart from that pretty uneventful. Many thanks to Jim for taking my phone call and putting my mind at rest.
Didn't really anticipate having to do gearbox repairs whilst on holiday let alone at -20 degrees but, hey ho, life's for living!
Am going to see if a local garage will lend a ramp tomorrow (if they're open on Xmas Day - celebrated on 24th in Austria).
Need sleep now!

Re: Happy Holidays to all!
You seem confused, you were on 'the other side' now you are on 'this side'.
Hopefully Austria will be business as usual from Monday at least, is here in France as only Xmas day (25th) celebrated. Some individuals may take days off but most businesses open monday.
As Citrojim asked, how many gears do you have left, when I was a lad 4 were good enough and never did us any harm. We dreamed of having 5.......

Re: Happy Holidays to all!
Well...
as I left the last filling station where I spoke to Jim, I managed to get 5th at 1200rpm but that was soon killed by a hill. Had to drop to 3rd. Managed to get 5th again and made it all the way to Mauterndorf.
SatNav directed us over Obertauern which is 2000m. above sea level but we avoided that route just in case people were struggling to get up the mountain. Normally you find it's the Germans that think they don't need winter tyres on their Porsches and end up blocking the route up to Obertauern. If that was the case, I would have needed 1st gear again for setting off and I really didn't want to find it was not there and have to do a 60km detour again back to the Tauern tunnel not after 1000 miles anyway!!!
So, in theory, I did arrive with all 5 gears but some investigation works are required and I will look at this as soon as I can get a ramp or borrow a trolley jack from somewhere. There's plenty of logs (for logs, read axle stands!) Just need to make sure they are true.
It all adds to the fun of Xmas!
Everything was OK again by the toll station after the Tauern tunnel on the A10 at Sanckt Michael im Lungau

Loss of 1st and 5th Gear on long cold journey.
Home safe and sound. After I uploaded those photos, it started snowing slowly for 4 days. 0.5 m. per day!!! The hilarious thing is they cope with it so easily.CitroJim wrote:Delighted you reached your destination safely Roger How many gears did you have left?

The prognosis on the loss of gears is this:-
We 'wangled' a free inspection with Aerbo (sorry I do not have umlauts on the the keyboard) through Sylvia's brother.
We got the Xantia up on a ramp and had a real good poke around. Everything was fine!
So here's what we reckon happened...
My car lost its undertray some time in the past. I still have it but haven't attempted to repair it.
Although I cannot be 100% sure about shade temperatures when we were driving, I believe that as we were driving south through Germany, water was getting flicked up on to the 'ball and tube' linkage that enables the gear linkage rods to be maneouvred into their correct location. This 'ball and tube' linkage that I so badly described is the linkage at the front of the gear lever selector rod. It has a tube on it which is parallel with the front of the car and approx. 50 mm. diameter.
Droplets of water must have been flicked up into the tube and gradually frozen with the wind chill thus limiting the full action of this component.
When we stopped at Bergen, east of Munich, and sent out our distress flare to Jim (thanks again Jim), we were stopped for about 45 minutes which was the longest break we had had in the 1000 mile drive (850 miles up to this point).
We just managed to get into 5th at very low revs (1200 after gear change) as we left the service station only to be hit by a mountainous incline and so we had to drop to 3rd again but it did go back into 5th where it remained for the remainder of the journey bar the last 6 miles.
The next day the gears appeared to be fine but a little rougher than usual. This had improved even more by the next day.
We packed the linkage with thick grease at Aerbo to keep water out and it has performed faultlessly ever since.
I scratched my head for some time wondering if the gear linkages had a different specification for wintery climates, feeling that perhaps have rubber would have a higher silica content. Until it dawned on me about the undertray. It is there for a reason and not just to make our lives more difficult when changing oil filters and performing general inspections.
Time to get the undertray repaired!
