How much weight can a xantia take?

Post by Jaf »

Hi guys. Run out of bottled gas again. Normally we get gas in my dad's VW syncro van but he's out.

I once had too much weight in a Ford transit and it fishtailed all over the place (solved by unpacking and repacking the van).

The gas bottles are about 20kg each and are quite big so I can only fit 5 in the boot, which the car copes with fine. I starting wondering how much weight the car suspension can cope with when it's all in the boot. Normally if I'm getting floor tiles I put the back seats down to spread the load. Are they better at carrying weight than a normal suspension set up?

Jaf, i have not got the exact figures to hand, but I think 500kg is about the limit, inlcuding you and fuel

But I wouldn't feel right about this all being in the boot.. axle loadings and tyres etc..

I carried 400kg spread around the car.. last week, and as ever no problems at all..

i am sure the suspension will have a break point.. as will the tyres.. not forgetting braking issues etc..

I would never go over the GVW as if anything went wrong, it's a bit tricky legally...

i think the xant is around 1312-1335kg unladen, i just googled and saw a GVW of 1910kg which is a difference of 580.. I am not sure if these figures are accurate though

I only once severly overloaded a hydropnumatic Citroen and was a CX estate, when I sold it I included a spare engine, gearbox and lots of other goodies, after the four hefty lads had climbed in I didn't think the suspension was going to lift, but it did - eventually and they got home to Plymouth OK.

A couple of years ago I came back from Newcastle in the XM estate with a 2.1 engine and gearbox in the back plus some other bits, coming through Derbyshire I also picked up a Ford 1.8 diesel engine, apart from its liesurly pace up hills you would never have known it was carrying all that weight - the ride was superb 8-)

So, in short I dont think you need to worry about filling your Xantia up with gas bottles - not from the weight point of view anyway.

When I need to renew my MIG bottle (Argoshield light) I put it on the back seat and strap it in with both seatbelts :)

It is good practice to spread the load. I have carried 400kg behind the rear axle in the form of bagged concrete mix and that gets a bit "waggly" at high speed.

Once carried two complete 1098 A Series mini engines complete with gearboxes in my GS estate. Took a while to rise but other than that couldn't tell.

Who remembers the BX commercial featuring a car with a bootload of rocks?

I had 22off 600x600x50 paving slabs in the back of my 1.8 8v xantia for a 40 mile trip, it took an age to rise a bit then the journey was scary - handling and fear of the Bill, the poor old car never fully recovered even after sphere change......

I learned a lesson that day - never again!

50kg tools, 500kg (25 bags) of concrete dry mix in the back. Thirsty run at speed, and you had to choose your "lines" carefully.
