2004 2.0 HDi - particulate filter?

Post by dnsey »

As my current C5 has experienced severe loss of compression on one cylinder, cause still to be diagnosed, and I have no time to investigate at present, I'm looking to replace it.
I've found a 2004 (facelifted) 2.0 HDi Exclusive at a good price, but some distance away.
Just so I'm prepared, can anyone confirm if this model will have a particulate filter, and if so, what the filter cleaning / replacement and fluid top-up intervals are, please?

A facelifted C5 2.0 HDi does have a FAP filter yes.

They don't seem to suffer quite as early replacements as the 2.2 does, and generally give much less hassle.

Im not sure on the recommended top up service of the fluid, I think its around 100K for those? Im not worrying about that yet!

If the car is driven for long distances then the filter will have chance to operate, if its confined to the town it could get choked and require a good motorway blasting.

It doesn't put me off the 2.0 138 engine as they are excellent, very fuel effcient too. So many modern diesels have FAP filters now, its somehting we need to get used to sooner or later.

Try not to be put off buy it, give the car a good drive, use all the revs and see if anything appears to be at fault.

Thanks for that.
I've actually had a look at it now, and, whilst it was a very nice looking car, there were all sorts of errors logged - not only suggesting that the filter was clogged, but also that the lift pump had problems, so I somewhat reluctantly walked away.
At 97k, it sounds as though it was due an Eolys topup soon too.
I've now acquired a local low-milage 2004 phase1 2.0 HDi. It's only VTR trim, which in Mk1 terms is a bit basic, but will do for now!

Yes, if C5s are not looked after they can get all kinds of faults. It also depends on how they are driven etc. The next one you looked at might be a minter with 150K and no faults, it all comes down to its owners in my opinion.

Good news with the S1, that is the most simple HDi the 8v 110. VTR isnt too basic in S1 trim, you should have dual zone climate control, an alarm, 16" alloys, rear wiper etc etc. You can even add cruise control very cheaply and easily. The VTR spec almost took over from the SX but added a few things. So its a mid spec car.

All the bells and whistles are not needed! I shy away from the high spec cars with directional xenons, headlight washers etc. Its more to go wrong and I dont want a £1200 headlamp writing the car off if I had a bump. Your better off with the necessities  A C5 spoils you in other ways anyway, one of the ultimate motorway cruisers.

(C5 Mk.1 sx) By far the best car seats I've found for not worsening a bad back.

They are pretty comfy, especially with the armrests on those.

I never get uncomfortable in C5 seats, not as armchair like as an XM or as hugging as an Activa but equally as comfortable.

Hi,
Son has a C5 VTR 2litre 138bhp, 2005. Was the particulate filter and eolys fluid a standard fitment, or optional ??. I thought I read somewhere that the filler for eolys juice is next to petrol filler, on right side rear of car. My sons car has only the petrol filler tube fitted. A clarification would be useful. Thanks

I don't have it on mine but the Eolys tank is adjacent to the fuel tank, under the car.
Filling is a bit of a procedure and done with a filling kit.
There isn't a filler as such, replenishment is achieved by opening a joint in the delivery pipe and using the filling kit.

Yes, every 138bhp C5II has a particulate filter and fluid.

As Steve says, there is a filling procedure which is not as easy as just pouring liquid into a tank next to the fuel tank, you wont see another filler neck. The tank is located on the NS of the car, about under the rear seat. There is a metal heat sheild covering the tank, removed you can see how much fluid is in there.

Thanks for replies. Thought we had got away from having eolys junk. :(
What was wrong in having a little hatch under rear seat to fill the tank through, and a window in tank for level. These designers (brain dead morons) should be shafted with the blunt end of a pineapple for the continued cockups they make

Oh dear, -I seem to have stopped this thread in it's tracks.
I seem to get so annoyed when I think of stupidity getting one over decent thoughtful practical design.

Indeed - the complexity of replacing (certain) light bulbs is the one that winds me up most.

Reminds me on Christmas Trees .

You are NOT alone Greg 1100 - A lot of people are getting Hissed Off with ludicrous technology ....... the new " additions " to the MoT may be the clincher for some .

I read with a twisted smirk from our wonderful Govt' - this is to bring us in line with the rest of europe ????

Don't most of Europe have Bi -annual mot's - not yearly , didn't most of europe ditch the Eolys , Fap - crap with no mot penalty ?

We now have a 10p per litre difference in Pet/Derv ? one single expensive diesel " new tech" repair will surely obliterate any falsely perceived economy advantage ? Especially with smaller cars Grrrrr Grrr Hisss - must cool it , Its Xmas ? for who exactly........

Wife fancies a Honda Jazz - She may just get one ?
