tried to buy some 30A wire, but they claimed they didn't have any.
Car tackle merchants sell the proper wire.
You connect the wire with the engine turned off and preferably even with the battery disconnected.
If you score a blower that spins the wrong way, you can reverse the red and black wires seen in the picture above … if the black wire is long enough to reach.

Right, tried the test wire over the weekend, and there's absolutely nothing from the motor (it's also becoming more difficult to get it going by bashing it).

I did it by touching as much of the wire as I could to the battery and motor terminals (didn't disconnect the battery, because the positive terminal is very secure after a repair). Should that be good enough to get some kind of response?

Is this a strong indication that the motor really does need to be replaced?

Sounds like the motor to me if you connected to the single +ve contact on the motor and got nothing.
I wonder if someone could comment on whether it could just be worn brushes?
These can be replaced.

Yes, worn brushes if both positive and earth from the battery give nothing.
Can’t remember the size of brushes, something like 8x9x22 mm.
There should be many brushes on Ebay.

Yes, I did try both battery terminals, just in case; and it was to the single +ve contact.

Surprised at just how many of these brushes there are on ebay. :-) How many brushes would I need, btw? Is there a guide to replacing the brushes (I've searched but didn't find)?

Thanks.

Normally just two brushes required, follow the wire to the commutator (the bit that goes round) the brushes are normally held in by a spring clip of some sort and have long springs on them when removed.

I think the problem with smaller spares such as this is that the scrappies often just aren't interested in selling 'em, silly really.

Pics are of a 405 blower, can find you one of those and a connector if you want when I'm at the scrappies next week. Is your Xant' one the same?

The one I replaced last week on my xantia was different to the standard one, the housing and control unit differed. However the basic motor and fan blades were the exact same so I dismantled it and made one good which works perfectly out of the two.
