Hi folks
Thanks for the rev counter reset tip! I pulled off the trip button - it put up a hearty fight and when it came out it was over an inch long!! Used a cable tie to nudge the needle back although it was reluctant to go at first.
Now I know what RPM I am at - I notice that even warm the tickover sits at 1000 rpm, which seems a little fast. It was 1000 also on cold start.
Could this be related to my lower than expected MPG figure and what can I do to adjust?
New air filter etc on.
Cheers
Alan

Re: Normal Xantia 1.9TD Tickover RPM?
Hi Alan
I think they normally run at about 800, the way we always set them up in the olden days was to adjust them to the speed that gave least vibration. I wouldn't think that would have an appreciable effect on your economy.

Re: Normal Xantia 1.9TD Tickover RPM?
The fast idle is there when cold to prevent stalls/warm the engine up.
With age it fails and the pump's default setting is fast idle.
Follow the pipe from the back of the pump to the electrovalve.
Chances are the valve has died.
If you take a pipe from the vacuum pump on the end of the cam to the fast idle on the back of the pump, therefore excluding both electrovalves, you should then be on permanent slow idle (the vacuum pulls the cable) and also have disabled the egr (assuming it isn't stuck open) as it is controlled by the other electrovalve.

Re: Normal Xantia 1.9TD Tickover RPM?
i would expect it to have an impact on economy as the engine won't be *resting* at its true rpm so its baseline fuel consumption will be higher. You'll also be using the brakes more as engine braking would be less effective

Older (certainly up to 96) 1.9TD the cold idle is controlled by a separate thermostat. These too die with age. The BoL is for once quite good on this subject, but make sure you get the correct fast idle thermostat (depends on year). Replace, and with engine COLD adjust cable so idle is approx 1,000 rpm (be quick before engine warms up). Then get the engine hot and and check idle is about 800 rpm - you may want to make it a bit faster so hot idle isn't uncomfortably 'lumpy'.
