A mate has put about 40 quid of Petrol in his Xantia Hdi. When he realised what he had done he did not start the engine. He however turned on the ign, to charge phone......thereby activating the pump in tank. Towed to garage and when work done they informed him that pump was wrecked because of petrol going through it when he turned ignition on.
Anyone else heard of this?

Re: True or False
Hmmmm,
The lift pump would ave run for five seconds and then cut out. True the HP pump might have seen some petrol maybe but I'm sure not enough to wreck it. I guess it could have been removed and flushed with fresh diesel...
Sounds a bit fishy to me...

Re: True or False
Hmmm.....! I doubt that BUT I wouldn't discount it entirely, diesel is a better lubricant than petrol.
Questions was this petrol into an empty tank? how long was the pump running on petrol? or was it pumping a diesel petrol mix.
What checks have the garage done to ascertain that the pump is stuffed? Does the pump actually run? and if so what is the rail pressure when it is running?

Re: True or False
It was only the tank pump that was charged as a replacement item. There was some diesel in tank.
They maintain that turning ign on wrecked the tank pump. What is so different about the petrol tank pumps?......they run in petrol.

Re: True or False
That is rubbish! Both pumps are designed to run submerged in fuel.. Diesel or petrol it doesn't matter...lexi wrote: They maintain that turning ign on wrecked the tank pump. What is so different about the petrol tank pumps?......they run in petrol.
Still, at least he knows he has a good lift pump now...

Re: True or False
Rubbish about wrecking the in tank pump.. Im intending buying a petrol in tank pump to fit my hdi to see if it will do the job as for some stupi reason the derv ones are double the petrol ones.. They do the same job.. Anyway... Had the petrol got to the engine presureing pump driven by the cam belt then theres a possibility it could be harmed but you said he didnt start the car..so i doubt that.
My guess is they are bulling...

Re: True or False
My understanding of the reason for failure of the in tank pumps is that the material they're made from disintegrates, so it's possible that the pump was on its last legs and putting petrol through it finished it off.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Re: True or False
Well failure of tank lift pumps is not exactly an unheard of problem on C5'sGibbo2286 wrote:My understanding of the reason for failure of the in tank pumps is that the material they're made from disintegrates, so it's possible that the pump was on its last legs and putting petrol through it finished it off.

I drained a 307 90 hdi with the bosch system. It was driven over 25Km on approx 80% petrol. The next day it failed to start. I disconnected the fuel line at the filter, added an extension pipe and used the lift pump in the tank to drain most of the mix. I then added 50L of diesel, changed the fuel filter and off she goes. 30,000Km later all is still fine.
