Vegi Oil

Post by wrinklet1 »

Hi again, I just had a break away with the family and put 9 litres of Tesco Veg Oil into the deisel tank. I didn't thrash the car, but did do 70 mph a lot of the way (175 miles)not much steady 56mph either. Returned 50.3 mpg, chuffed as a butty was I. Did 250miles to Reading later in the weeks on just Diesel and got 43 mpg but we did go through the Welsh mountians which was a wonderfull sight.
So, Vegi oil was a great success with a marked increase in mpg and only the odd chippy smell. I did a 25% ratio roughly.
Cheers

My local ASDA sells it in 15L drums for about £9.[;)] I doubt much of what they sell goes into chip pans.[:o)]
But my tip would be to find your local Indian supermarket.[;)]

Nope, I have one of those rarities known as a petrol Xantia.[:o)]
If I had a diesel it would be very tempting just to try out a few gallon though.

Hi,I read a while ago in the DIESEL CAR mag that putting some veg oil was good for the engine as you do not get the same lubrication qualties with low sulpher dieselas was the case before.
Anyone know if there is any substance to this theory

The TD xantia will run ok on 100% veg oil the only problem is the tell tale smell .It is correct the veg oil has better lubrication properties the standard diesel and has been very successful with Bosch injection pumps . In winter you will have to use A mix of fuel to get the fuel viscosity down to allow the oil to flow freely through the fuel lines on a cold start up .

I have heard Lucas pumps do not last running on veg oil .Seemingly they can handle the increased viscosity when the oil is cold and causes premature wear .The only way they can do it is if the fuel has a preheater to heat the oil to apprx 70 deg C , to bring the viscosity down.

will mixing 50/50 with diesel reduce the viscosity, allowing the pump to accept it at lower tempertures?

Yes - that will be a problem in winter time - unless you install some means of preheating & clean diesel start tank/feed circuit.
It's exactly the low temp vicosity of veg oil that's the problem. It simply closes in to butter substance - the lower the temp.
Y's ago the same problem existed with standard diesel - because of the rather high contents of low viscosity reminents - which blocked the fuel lining - with a susbstance looking like candle bits.

I have been running my Xantia TD and ZX Aura on red diesel. About £18 to fill up Aura and £24 for Xantia - yet to try veggie oil as worried about the tell tale smell and craving for chips with salt & vinegar.

And you are not worried about the tell-tale red staining?
You might not think Customs and Exise bother with cars but there's a few people who thought the same thing where my dad works.
Oh, my dad is a plumber, works for HM prisons.

Oh dear well I must stop. Just trying to save a few bob. I hope all red diesel and veggie oil users will now convert.

The big difference between red diesel and veggi oil is you can legally use veggi oil as long as you pay the fuel duty on it.
Somebody posted the details in another thread.
The red dye in red diesel stains everything it comes into contact with and hangs around for years after you stop using it.
I have even heard tell of garages refusing to service cars with red diesel stains.

Just for general interest -
What's the price level for red & legal diesel juice in UK [?]
In DK the red (heating fuel) is approx £0.52 /L
the legal diesel is approx £0.62 /L
- no big savings then.
Beginning next year our heating fuel will be added a stain colour - going "red" like yours (donno the exact colour yet) - probably our legal diesel will then have raised tax [}:)]
At the mo dicussions are on reports of the raising particle level in cities - because of increased numbers of diesel cars sold the past y's here.
Especially the owners "chipping" their diesels for more power - is discussed.
Won't surprise me if legislation here suddenly changes seriously on these issues soon - like MOT diesel particle tests with the car allready on the brake test stand.
Veggy oil is way out of the question here - killed by tax.
