Can I fit 195/65 R15 Tyres toMy Xantia TD/Radiator

Post by ecohouse1 »

Hi Folks

I am ordering Winter tyres (4) for the Xantia Estate.

Can I fit 195s on the rims as I notice it has 185's on at the moment?

Also Radiator looks tired it has blue coolant residue and rust flakes at the bottom inside.

Any good recommended sources of radiators for the XUD 1.9 TD and are they worth getting form a dismantlers?

Cheers in advance

I think 195 is actually the standard size.

185/65R15 is the standard 15 inch steels.
195/65R15 is 2.09% larger diameter so within the maximum 2.5% difference recomended.
Your speedo will be affected though.

Try ebay for the rad, or gsf. Can't remember if the 1.9TD went through a stage of different hose fittings though

Would you not be better with the narrower 185 for winter tyres, to press through the slush and snow better? And would the 185 be a bit cheaper :-D

Thanks for the replies so far. Funnily enough I looked at 185's first and they were more expensive! I reckon its because the 195 is a more common fit and as such, more are made/fitted so are cheaper?

I wanted Uniroyals and its c£69 a corner for 195s and £74 a corner with 185s!

I have a Merc 190 which is apalling in the snow with rear wheel drive etc. It has 185 as standard and I fitted 195 on it a few years ago so just assumed that all 185 wheels were the same!

Yes I notice there are a couple of types of radiator listed and mione seems to have the "extra" stub half way up.

Cheers

IIRC, there was something on the Forum about the method of hose connection, some being conventional, and some being "bayonet". Seem to recall comment that the bayonet type a bit PITA.

Also, there may be different radiators, depending on whether or not you have aircon

Interesting what you say about the 195 being cheaper. Do you know what your rim width is? Have a look at an Equivalency Table, which will list Min, Max and "Ideal Tyre Width" for different wheel widths (have a look at //www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk)

Getting worried now as Pneus only list 185's for the Xantia!

I know on my 2CV that you can fit 135s onto the 125 standard rim!

Does anyone have 195's on a steel wheel Xantia at the moment?

Am i right in thinking that the higher power models have 205s? I seem to remember seeing this in the drivers handbook.

Get that rad replaced ASAP!

There's two types of rad for the 1.9TD

One, the earlier one, has spring clip hose clips and the other has the dreaded bayonets and is in fact the same rad as in the 2.1TD and the Activa...

Bayonet and spring clip types are NOT interchangable unless you also swap top and bottom hoses...

Be careful and make sure you get a Xantia rad and not a Pug 406 1.9TD Rad. They look similar but the 406 one is a tad longer and won't fit...

If you have bayonets, I'll offer some hard-won advce on how to disconnect the bayonets whilst saving the hoses...

Sorry ecohouse  , didn't mean to put the cat among the pigeons with the tyres & wheels data in the Eqivalency Tables. I don't know if all 1.9TD Series 1 were on 185/65/15 (steels). Certainly mine is, with wheel width 5.5J.

In my Haynes, ignoring 14" wheels, it gives tyre pressures for 185, 195 and 205, though the latter two are a fractionally lower profile, so certainly the wider width tyres are fitted to some Xantia, but maybe to the newer/higher performance models, with some having alloy wheels, like Xac.

If your TD has 5.5J wheels like mine, the Equivalency Tables give the Maximum Tyre Width as 195mm, so you should be OK. Ideally, if you were buying spare steels for your winter tyres, then I'd be looking for 6J for 195. I don't know which Xantia models used 6J, but it seems to be a popular wheel width on newer models in general, probably to accomodate the use of wider/lower profile tyres that we are now blessed with :(

Thanks Xantidote - mine is a series 2 1999.

I have contacted Blackcircles who are doing the job to ask their opinion.

Citrojim - it looks like it has spring clips that you remove with mole grips so maybe that is a relief!

Just collected the car from an independent - 4 hours labour for new timing belt with a new water pump & aux belt too. Thought that wasn't too bad.

I just didn't have the time to do it myself this time.

Interesting, the what tyre fits on what wheel table.
After ordering our Ultragrips for the C5 (so it didn't matter anyway,
though might have been interested if I couldn't get the Goodyears) spotted
these on ebay, item number 280764113854 ..........
195 instead of 205 on presumably a 6.5 rim; chart says it's ok.
