Locking Bolt Removal....

Post by citroenxm »

..... unoficially... :)

By this I mean, any ideas how to remove locking bolts when the Bolt "Key" is not present???

Ive tried the "Belt a socket over the bolt and try" tactik, but that hassnt worked..

Will I have to make something to fit in the holes... Judging by the 3 other bolts they arent excessivly tight..

Ideas???

Cheers
Paul

Try and Irwin Reverse-flute socket Paul. I've used one successfully for just this job in the past...

If you have a good hand drill...

Find a bit that is the same diameter as the threads on the bolt - or slightly less - punch, pilot and drill. The heads on those lock bolts are usually quite soft.
Once the wheel is off you should be able to get hold of the rest of the bolt with a pair of mole grips.

That is of course if you don't mind ruining the bolt :D

Hi Paul, are these the earlier bolts with the pegged socket or the later ones with the milled stub?

If its the later, an old socket hammer on usually does the trick. The hammering sometimes helps to shock the thread and loosen it up a bit.

On the earlier bolts and stubborn late types, I use a LEFT HANDED STUB drill bit to make a hole in the centre of the bolt and then use an Easi-Out. I have had them come out whilst drilling, as its anti-clockwise. They never seem to be really tight as its not possible to over-tighten security bolts without them snapping. #-o I've yet to have to drill right through to collapse the threads.

I assume these are on Xantia alloy wheels? [-o< If so, none of the so called removal sockets work as the recessed hole in the rim is too tight to get the sockets in. I've even tried turning down the sockets, with dire consequences. :hb: :domo: :taz:

If you were nearer, you could bring the car to the workshop and I'd have the wheels off in a trice!

A lot of garages carry a special tool to rmeove locking wheel nuts these days. Its a hardened steel socket with a softer compound metal inside, its hammered onto the nut creating a once only "key" to remove the nut. Its usually about £40 to remove.

Never tried it, but if it's not tight would a length of hardwood with nails knocked through in the appropriate places work, perhaps?

I have a few wheel nut keys, I'll have a look at a couple of sets I have to see whether the code is visible from the top, are they the bolts with three holes on the top?
