Disaster. I've finally totally bust me moles
As the subject line, I've broke one of the hardened inserts off me moles.
Shot out and bought the nearest I could see to try to get the job away, but the jaws are as soft as a soft thing by comparison.
They don't grip, and the serrations burr off so theres no chance really.
Anyone know where one can buy the genuine thing with hard as bullets jaws?
Anyone got (good) experience of any other of the plethora of offerings on the market?
Regards
Bereft.
Kevin

Re: Disaster. I've finally totally bust me moles
What are you trying to do with them Kevin?
I confess I have a pair but I hardly, if ever, use them and I attack some pretty tight things on a regular basis..
Give us a clue what you are doing that wrecks them so comprehensively and we may be able to suggest a better alternative...

You're not the only one!Xac wrote:Now I'm confused, what's the difference between mole and vice grips?
I presume that Mole Grips are a copyright brand name of the original tool whereas Vise Grip is the Irwin name for their version of "locking Pliers".
Whilst I rarely ever use them, when I do I prefer to use these Facom T5 Grip Pliers, I've had them for years and the jaws are still like new with sharp teeth, by comparison the teeth on my Mole grips are about as sharp as a rubber sharks tooth

Re: Disaster. I've finally totally bust me moles
i belive MOLE GRIPS were the original UK formular of locking grips,
i have alway found thiese to bite on release, something to do with the directiion the release lever operates,
i find IRWIN VICE GRIPS far superior and they dont bite on release as the release lever operates the oposite direction to MOLE GRIPS,
people seem to call all locking pliers/grips MOLES GRIPS when as far as im aware this is a brand name,

Mole grips. A set of 3 different sizes in B&Q for around £5. As much good as an ashtray on a motorbike.
I have had the same pair of VISE grips for 15 years. Far far better.

Now when I was a lad in the garage they were actually called Elmo grips and I had a pair for nealy 40 years until a toerag I employed nicked them when he left.

Any stuff made by Irwin is good. I have a set of their reverse-flute sockets for difficult nut and bolt removal and despite abuse including (but not limited to) being used to remove locking wheel studs, they remain perfect...
I'd expect their Vice Grips to be just as excellent...

Have to disagree Jim,You would do well to stay away from there Stanley blades (utility knife blades).
Way to floppy and easy to break makes them very dangerous, better of buying pound shop blades.

Original proper British Mole grips are very good. Got a 30 year old pair that have been hammered. You won't get proper Mole at 3 for a fiver....immitation.
The American ones are great as well..............Vise grips with an S. They have been out for years long before Irwin bought all these companys over.
Lets remember guys, Snapon make nothing.....all their stuff is contracted and made by others.

Re: Disaster. I've finally totally bust me moles
i agree that genuine Mole grips are somehow 'wrong' - the angles don't work for me, and there's not enough give in the tensioning system to allow them to be set for maximum grip in many cases.
OTOH, my (probably Chinese-made) unbranded grips have endured may years of abuse with nothing worse than a slight twist in the jaws.

I have a pair of 'grips' made by World Wide Tools*, bought for a couple of quid in 1981.
They have suffered indescribable abuse and I didn't expect them to last a month.
Still going strong, hardly as good as new though.
