1905cc White smoke not Steam ?
Just finished putting my 98 dispatch back together.
Bought it with a dead engine, so counted on getting another engine.
Got another engine for a mere £40 .It was a bare engine with EVERYTHING removed except tensioners and belt.It was out of a well serviced TD ZX.
So spent a few days changing everything over from the old non turbo engine.
Plugging holes that are not needed, like the oil feed at the back which I assume was for the turbo.
Changed over the injector pump, injectors and glows. With the pump cradle attached it all changed over fairly easily and even that bolt behind the pump was ok to do.
Anyhow that moment arrives when its time to turn the key pop in the code and start her up !! .
"OH NUTS" the damn code doesnt work I thought, red light remains lit on the key pad.
After 30 minutes rooting around the connections one of the multiplugs was not quite together properly .
Turned the key entered the code again and voila the green light comes on , it was a few seconds after the glow plug light went out that I turned the key to start her.
I had hardly turned the key and it sprung to life. I was expecting to have to crank it for a bit to clear any air from the system, my initial priming and turning over of the engine without the code had done its job.
It starts and ticks over ok BUT, it is SMOKIN white unburnt fuel not steam.
Now this would be ok but even when upto temperature it is still SMOKIN.
I am going to check the valve clearances tommorow to see if they are a bit tight.
But as it is a TD engine with a non turbo bosch pump is there anything I can adjust or am I unlucky and may have low compression or valves need regrinding.
I have a compression tester but will have to check if its a petrol or diesel tester. So pleased it starts so easily but dissapointed with the smoke.
I'll post up a photo of the old engine which I have taken the head off to see what damage there was. You may be supprised how much damage a broken valve causes to the piston and head.

A quick update to the smokey engine.
Took the injectors back out and it looks like one is damaged, probably the one from number 2 pot.
I havent scrutinised it yet but the tip looks damaged.
Another set in and all is good so far, will take it for a spin tonite and see if she drives ok. I guess the injector was letting to much juice through.

Seems to have conflicting symptoms. If it started easily that would suggest that the compression is good and the pump timing correct - the white smoke would suggest otherwise.
Retarded pump timing would cause blue/white smoke but it would also be difficult to start and probably run unevenly. Low compression would just make it difficult to start.
How long have you run it?

Peter it was definately unburnt fuel it had the right smell I suspect the damaged or bad injector.
I have had the temp upto fan cut in temp and in total about 40 minutes.
Funny thing it starts very very quickly, and when I put the second set of injectors in it started really easy. Even though 2 of the spill tubes were leaking badly and I had forgotten to put the blanking plug back on the last injector .
