can a c5 be driven with a wheel missing?

Post by sonoramicommando »

Ok - silly question time.
I've seen clips of GS & DS being driven with one rear wheel missing (in fact, one clip was an actual TV ad for GS, doing a slalom).
I'm curious to know if C5 is capable of doing that.
cheers,

I wouldn't like to try it with mine!
Never dared with the GS either, or the BX or Xantia.

But apparently there are a couple of American cars that can do it, as can some older SAABs.

It isn't the hydraulics that make it capable but the double wishbone suspension, so I have read anyway.
The McPherson struts aren't capable.

Ha ha I wouldn't want to try it either, to be honest.
Here are what I found after a quick search on YouTube:

Xantia (& GS & CX) - seems like this guy really likes three wheeling!!!

GS - this is funny:

all the hydraulic cit's i have seen doing this was with the suspension fully up on high,

because with it pumped fully up it becomes ridgied,

the other tric that can be performed with hydraulic cit's is changine a wheel without useing a jack,

plut just the oposite wheel up on a curb, put susp fully up which should lift the other corner off the ground,
if it doesnt you will be able to tip/rock it with one finger

so i dont see why its not possible with any hydraulic citroren, even the no full blooded C5

Could certainly do it with a CX, once broke an alloy front wheel at some speed, taking evasive action which curbed it, large lump out of alloy and tyre shredded, car steered perfectly only had to apply some correction when braking amazing, don't even like to think about it in a C5.

You could quite easily drive a CX with a flat front tyre, initially without even knowing it, doesn't affect the steering at all, on account of the central steering knuckles - guess how I know :?

I'm guessing it's able to hold its own when stopped with suspension on high but once you start moving and the computer decides to lower her down to normal ride height, you'd be greeted with the sound of your rear rotors getting a hiding from the pavement...

I know the Xant's can *just* keep the disc off the ground with the jack removed and suspension on high (tried once) but that is only about an inch max!

well the XANT is the very last full blooded hydraulic citroen,

i had a flat N/S rear tyre on my old AMI 8 years ago, 4 up including me driveing,

on route back to Whatlington garage (when it was H G Havaux's )from the cafe after lunch, my N/S rear passenger (Dave fnow from Marsh citroens ) was the first to notice,

when i pulled over the tyre was completly shreaded,

Had a motorway-speed blowout many years ago on a GS, from a bit of 'shrapnel' on the road. Apart from the 'bang' from the tyre as it went, there wasn't much other evidence, and it was easy to slow down and pull over at leisure.

I always had the idea that the Activa could pull the trick off.

The C5 CAN NOT be driven with a mising rear wheel, I have tried this, it doesnt work. Well it does but there is grinding noises as the brake disc protector meets the floor. I tried it in my garage and while the disck protector wa sjust off the floor, while driving backwards and forwards it met with the floor a few times. If that was not on, it would be able to manage it.

Im not sure why It can't, perhaps its to do with weight distribution, im not sure.

The only way any Citroen will do it is if the suspension is on high, otherwise the cars suspension travel will simply take up the gap left by the wheel and force the disc/protector to the ground.

In theory an Activa should be able to do this, as the front side to side height corrects should keep the front level and so keep the rear missing wheel high off the floor. Ive yet to try this with my Activa.
