C5 now gone, I am sad

Post by daviemck2006 »

I feel sad today, having just sold the C5. It,s the first time I have been sad on selling a car. Watched it driving away, the guy pulled off in 3rd and stalled it and I nearly jumped in and took the keys back! I feel a wee bit cheated cos I swapped it for a fiesta for my son, the cars were booking at within £50 of each other and the C5 was on sorn and needing new rear discs and pads and possibly calipers as well, and the fiesta has a new clutch and 4 new tyres and a new mot and 5 months tax, but a scrape in one wheelarch and no rust (surprising for a a ford) and my son loves it so I suppose the deal was ok, but I will miss the cit. Still have a french car (in name anyway) in the 107, but how long before I miss big car comfort? I can sense older car big car comfort coming on with an xud engine that will run veggie for commuting. Might be tempted by xant 1.9td sometime soon if I can get one for next to nowt!

I am the guy who drove off in 3rd and stalled it, sloppy gearbox took some getting used to, in the year I have had it I have spent over £2k including new callipers all round, new discs and pads......then came June 19th got as far as Ballindalloch on way to Northants, could not change gear, after call out to AA clown from garage in Keith arrived, no tools and no tacho time left. They sent out another who took car and us to Perth changed to AA 5 more times, took us finally to Halfords in Kettering. Flywheel had disintegrated ruining clutch £895.00. Drove five miles and the dreaded anti-pollution light came on. Car eventuly taken by AA to Citroen dealer in Kempston, charged £121 for fixing faulty censor, 8 miles down Road lights came on again. AA came out and carried out particulate regeneration, did 50 miles before it came back with same fault. Drove back to NE Scotland with engine warning lights. Took it to local garage, who changed fuel filter, four glow plugs, still had lights on. Took it to Pedigreed Cars, did loads of checks and said Particulate filter needed replacing, quoted £600, I bought new one for £150, and had local garage fit for £39. Lights still on. Citroen dealer said only they could finish job, needed 2 litres of EOLYS fluid and reset, took it there last Friday £125.......drove it half a mile and lights back on. To be continued.

doh!!!

Guessing mk1 2.2 then. Just filled up my Eolys tank, never had any bother with mine apart from low additive warning which was topped up the next day.

Got to say love my C5, had a drive in a newish model today and what a load of rubbish sprung German looking pile of poo. Was not very comfy at all and what horrid seats and seat materials.

Keep us posted.

Really sorry to hear that tale of woe. That C5 was the most reliable car I have ever had and I loved it. It had had front discs and pads in my ownership, wouldn't have thought they needed changing but I did think rears weren't far from needing doing. I had issues with Pedigreed cars when the regeneration and eolys needed doing last time, think it was about 65000 miles, they told me for a start that the management light was on and was in limp home mode because the turbo was shot and I was quoted £1500 plus for repair of that then £500 for topping up fluid. Then the next day they phoned and said it wasn't the turbo at £1500 plus but a sensor at £100, still ended up with a bill for about £500 for sensor and fluid. I vowed never again to use them again. I never had any issues with the engine again, only other two things needed doing was the ecu for heating failed and was replaced, common problem, and alternator failed and was replaced. Apparently the flywheel is a known problem on C5 due to the design but never had any issues there.

As to the fiesta, it needed another clutch, the one that was in was not fitted correctly and oil was leaking out of the crankshaft seal into clutch, and air con never worked, but apart from that ran ok until my son crashed it a few weeks ago. It is now sold to Inverness as a damager repairable or for spares. It was very heavy on petrol for a 1.25 though, never returned more than 30mpg when I checked it, I shudder to think what it did at the hands, or feet, of my 18 year old son.

This sounds to me like the usual story of the 'wrong people' being entrusted to diagnose and fix your car, and a LOT of completely unnecessary parts and expense. In terms of engine/DPF issues, almost all of your problems could have been resolved by taking the car to a specialist who could have legally removed your DPF (yes, it will still pass the MOT), and removed all of the sensor warnings from your ECU. Problem sorted - it then becomes a reliable diesel car. http://www.energy-tuning.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; are doing my car (free plug but I am not in any way associated with them) and have done a friends, who has had trouble free motoring ever since. They charge £300 for our car (I have same car as you), and then you have no more Eolys Fluid to buy, no more anti-polution or diesel additive faults, nothing. That is a fraction of what you have spent on Eolys Top-ups, DPFs, etc, etc, etc, etc ..........

It sounds like you've been really badly advised regarding this car/engine. The C5 2.2HDi is a fantastic, reliable car (one of the most reliable cars I've owned so far), but once you start getting any DPF issues at all, the correct course is to either get the DPF removed (and sensors mapped out of ECU), or to push the car into your nearest river...... :-D

... but never to start spending money with Citroen Dealers and garages who haven't got a clue and charge you money for parts with no guarantee that it will fix your problems.

There are even people on this forum who can apparantly remove DPFs and map out the ECU sensors .... but as you can see from my signature below, I had no luck finding one! ..... so my car is going to a recommended specialist, as above. I don't even have any issues with my DPF!..... but I know they will come, so want the action taken now before I get the serious issues that you've seen.
David.

£500 to top up fluid my god. Just topped up mine and fluid was approx £80 + vat and took me 30 mins and a counter reset using the works Launch diagnostics which I guess most garages could do for a small charge.

If looked after and driven not only on 5 mile short trips and also fluid topped every 50k or so then car should not give problems.

C5s are not really the cars to run unless you are a DIYer, not just because its much cheaper to repair them yourself but as David says a lot of garages don't have a clue and will charge you for everything they do whether it cures the problem or not.

As I said it was my car, The cit garage in forres more or less said to me when car was 6 yrs old, 65 to 70k on clock scrap it and go into the showroom and buy another. I would not go there if it was the last garage left in the world. If it were not for the fact that we were giving up caravanning I would still own it. There is a citroen specialist between Keith and Buckie, I think it is called PCH Garage Services, as far as I know it is run by an ex citroen dealer mechanic from Archibald motors buckie who have been closed for a few years now, they are supposed to be good although I have never used them. Pedigreed cars will just keep on taking extortionate amounts of money off you and never fix it. DPF removal would be the way forward, I was looking into this, was going to be my next move had I kept it. They are complicated things which I dont really understand, I'm sure some of the members on here will be able to help. If it were not for them I would have paid a fortune to fix heating when it broke instead of a £70 part and 10 mins. I hope you get it sorted out, with a new clutch, brakes and dpf removed it will be a good car for many more miles.

Thanks Davie, I had a further appointment with Pedigreed last Wednesday, but cancelled it telling them I was not prepared to keep paying them to practice using their computer as they were going through a series of perhaps it is this at my expense. My local garage collected it Friday morning to check out turbo pipes, gates etc, He could not see anything wrong, cleared faults, and is going to do a bit more research. Yes chaps I did look into having the DPF removed and ecu reset, would have cost £450 and 300 miles each way, so I thought having the thing replaced would be better........You will see from my new signature, I have had and loved Citroens for years, despite all recent problems with aptly registered FFU, I am still very fond of it, I just want it to get better. I will try and make contact with PCH Garage on Monday.

I must have dreamt all the miles I did in it :-D :-D

He must be meaning when he got it from me, must be near enough exactly 1 year ago. I'll clear that confusion it is a 2003 sx 2.2hdi in silver, although it looks like a 2.0 because I got a set of wheels with new tyres for next to nowt a few years ago and I preferred them anyway. Get these probs sorted and it will be good for ages yet. IIRC it was about 105k on the clock this time last year so only run in!

As daviemck2006 said I acquired car from him in Sept 2011 it is a C5 2.2hdi SX it has now done 110,000 miles I shudder to think how much those 5000 miles have cost. I have amended my signature to reflect reg year. All previous models bought new. I have never had a car to equal my '73 DS23 Pallas
