"Bonnet open" switches for XM.

Post by first-things-first »

Hi everyone
Thought I would share this with you all.
I was quoted a general price of "about 25-30 pounds" (needed chassis/RP number to be sure) for a bonnet switch (as used by the infamous texalarm to detect that the bonnet is open or not). Not sure if that was for one or two [8)]
After politely declining such a wonderful price, I set about trying to find a substitute.
I had checked the electrics before and the feeds were OK because if I put a piece of wire across the connector(s) for left and right catches the "bonnet open" message would come up (and would go out if removed).
Looked at Maplin (electronics and electrical parts retailer in the UK) and they had the right sort of switch a "push to break" type. Price 49 pence each. After some relocation of the new switches to the plastic where the VIN plate is, some extension to the original connector wires and finally a couple of bullet connector insulations suitably trimmed (to ensure you get the correct height on the switch to engage) it all works fine.
In the words of that Mastercard advert :
Two simple "push to break" switches"
A little extra wire (about 1m).
A little time and ingenuity.
Saving 58 pounds for two simple switches. Priceless!
Regards
Andrew
