HPi and IDE. The same disaster?

Post by R9UKE »

Something just clicked, and I'd like to confirm it.

The Citroen HPi engine fitted to the C5 suffers from fuel injections issues, particularly with the fuel pump. So does the IDE engine fitted to Renaults of the same period.

I've heard nothing but negative comments on them both, and it's common knowledge to avoid the Laguna IDE like the plague... fuel pumps and pressure regulators are on back order!

Is it the same lump??? Or two coincidental disasters?

I know nothing about the engine so could not say either way, BUT, what idiot decided they would get an electrical pump to push a solvent at high pressure? it was never going to work was it
Ive seen the figures and aparently PSA spent 460 million francs on development and expected to make 200 units a day..........................

Lots of other people have mad their own direct injection high pressur epetrol Engine though.

Im sure we have talked about this before Luke

Maybe the both companies were trying to out-do one another and just made two very poor engines in the process

It does seem a little odd that around the same time both manufacturers brought out engines with very similar faults but at the same time similar advances. Im pretty sure they are not the same unit.

Were the IDE only fitted to LagunaIIs?
I think the HPi only saw the C5s.

Correct. They are. I did know that.

My Renault Avantime has the same engine as the Citroen C5 and Peugeot 407 V6. The Ford Focus and Mini Diesel have a HDi under the bonnet. Engine sharing happens and that's what I'm asking about.

Dean, nice facts there, I didn't know they had such high hopes for the engine. If you type "Citroen C5 HPi" into Google, "fuel pump" appears below in the suggestions

That's what made me ask the community, seems a bit too coincidental!

The IDE was also put in the old shape Mégane. Most are dead now. They're even worse than the dCis!

PSA share an awful lot of engines with other makes, most of which are linked with Ford and the manufacturers Ford own, Volvo now uses the 1.6 and 2.0 HDI, Jaguar the 2.7 and 3.0HDi, Landrover etc etc. The mini also has the DS3 petrol engines.

Some are designed with Ford, the later HDis for example.

On a slightly unrelated topic, is the 2.0D4-D as in the Toyoya (dreary) Corolla and Toyota ('some car') Avensis the 2.0HDi 8v PSA engines? It seems odd that Toyota would share the 1.4HDI in the Yaris and offer 2.0 diesels with the same bhp output as the excellent 8v HDis without it actually being the 2.0 HDI.

Ah, DCis are not that bad Luke, when they are asleep they are virtually reliable!

I believe the best DCi wears an IZUZU badge under the DCI logo ...

I did used to wonder why you liked petrols, its very obvious though

I like diesels as PSA make the best ones :D

Indeed! I can sacrifice a few MPG to know I won't be shelling out for a turbo replacement. HDis seem pretty faultless, I have to say. If I were to buy a diesel, it'd be a HDi!

They really are good. I don't mind my Activas fuel usage and drive it hard, its going to use lots anyway so what is a bit more! But with the HDi C5 I can go anywhere very cheaply, but also in comfort, luxury and speed, I like that

Hi Guys , not wishing to interrupt , but whilst you are on the subject of engines who makes the diesel motors fitted to the Nissan X- Trails ? and are they any good - or best avoided ?

I have been told that they are cam - chain Renaults ? and are either 115 or 136 Ponies .

Advice welcomed please.

That would be the delightful 2.2DCi from Renault, its superbly rubbish, I would avoid :)

That is unless you like replacing Turbos

DCi's get a bad rep for their constantly failing turbo's but most of that is down to poor oil change schedules, Renault service intervals of 15k is ridiculous and kills the engines rapidly. 6-8k oil change intervals work a lot better and i've seen plenty of 1.9DCi's with 200k still going strongly. The 2.2DCi however is another kettle of fish, its plagued with failed inlet manifold gaskets that blow the dipstick out and deposits the oil all over the engine bay. EGR valves also constantly gum up causing loss of power which scares the crap out of you if it does it on the motorway!

Yes, the long service intervals go some way to explaining the faults with the 1.9DCis. However I thought it was 18K mile intervals?

Citroen have similar but a lesser problem with the 1.6HDi, when the long services are carried out turbo oil feed pipes become blocked. The long services are every 20K miles on the 1.6HDi :o Its the same for the later 2.0HDi 16v too, 20K mile services though they seem less plagued by the same faults. Both our 2.0HDi 16vs have always been done every10K or annually, I wouldnt have bought them otherwise. They now get done every 6K.
