2.2 HDi part identification.

Post by SaabC5 »

Was checking the fluid levels yesterday when i came across a broken actuator rod in the engine bay. Its to the right hand side of the engine in the centre of the picture below. The actuator is very thin and goes deep into the engine bay, it connects via a ball socket at the top where its broken. Whats the name/function of this little beasty please?

It's the control arm for your air inlet swirl control butterflies.

These are four flaps mounted on a shaft. The flaps blank off air intake ducts below 2100 rpm to turn your 16 valve engine into a 12 valve at low revs.

The flaps open above 2100 rpm to give you a 16 valve performance. Without them I bet your top end power/speed is limited?

Thanks Kev, dunno about top end cos i don't know how long its been broken. Car seemed fine last week on a trip to Doncaster and back but i have no real reference as its the 1st time i've done a long journey in the C5.
I'll have to get it sorted and then see what difference it makes.

Had the vacuum control arm replaced yesterday. What a pig of a job, its buried deep under loads of other pipes/paraphanalia and to say access is restricted is an understatement. After removing parts for about 40 minutes i could finally see the 3 securing screws and using an extra long socket extension with a torx bit on the end the whole unit was out (you can't buy just the control arm, its the whole arm/vacuum unit in one for £36+ vat from Mr Citroen). Relocating the new unit is even more difficult and resulted in much loss of skin on my hands/wrists. :( Took just under 3 hours total for something held on by 3 screws!
Goods news is the performance difference is very noticeable from before. It now pulls like a train from 2000rpm upwards and is just generally a better drive, i guess running on 12 valves all the time is not a good thing.

Excellent result - pleased to hear it made a good difference. I'm always a bit blunted when something takes that much effort and then it's a barely noticeable change.

Ah yes! but in all probability the rubber diaphragm has holes in it :-) and you are only a little way from getting the dreaded Anti Polution fault because the Turbo has overboosted due to lack of vacuum.
You will have to change it sooner or later I reckon that from about 80K miles up the rubber is past it's sell by date.
