One of these pesky noise questions
Hi there
I have a 56 plate C5 1.6 HDi manual hatch with 60K on the clock.
I've started to notice an engine noise when the engine is idling which disappears as the revs are dialled in. Makes no difference if the clutch is in or out.
It sounds like (feel free to laugh) the noise crickets make at night if you're on holiday in the med or such like (sort of a chirpy tinkling sound)
It's possibly always been there, maybe I'm just noticing it and as I say, it goes once the revs start to build.
I'm guessing a belt?
Any ideas?

All day long this will be a crank pulley id bet A chirruping noise is how we describe it to customers. The HDI's are prone for crank pulley failure. My TD Xantia makes the same noise for a few minutes in the dead of winter until it warms....again engine speed increases it dissapears, but the HDI's are worse for it.
Part number is usually 023PC0010 at GSF or 023PC0012 ...thats how many ive sold i remember the part number
They do cheaper quality and OE quality ones....ive not had any cheaper ones back yet so they must be ok
Hope that helps

We've had this same noise on the Synergie 1.9td for over three years now. In September 2008 it was diagnosed as the 'auxillary drive belt tensioner and spring' which were replaced. £201.45 later and the damn noise was still there. NOT HAPPY. I tried the old 'You mis-diagnosed the problem,so I'm not paying 'til it's fixed properly' routine - but the bandits wouldn't give us the keys back until the bill was paid.
Other mechanic's including a main dealer have since diagnosed the noise as 'the crankshaft pulley bearing mate'. Have never had the money to get it fixed as there was always something else wrong with it that took priority over the chirruping noise,so can't tell you how much it would cost to fix.
Only does it when engine cold, goes away with revs and a warm engine. What would happen if it 'seized'? Good luck.
