Have you checked/replaced the fuel filter? How old is it?

Sorry, it was unclear but I meant the filter.

Have you checked for air ingress - if there is clear piping between the filter and the diesel pump you may be able to see bubbles in the fuel while it is idling. If there is you will need to check the fuel lines and leakof pipes for leaks.

In fact, check the leakoff pipes first, for hardening and cracking, also the terminating cap could have come off.

The leakoff pipes are chained between the injectors.

If it is a poor flow from the lift pump then I would agree that that is likely to be the problem.
It could just be that the strainer is clogged, there is some nasty stuff grows in some diesel tanks.

As I understand it when HDi's have a problem on the fuel high pressure side they run on slightly after being turned off.

The best way of sorting this out will be getting a diagnostic check done, are you near anyone on the Lexia list?
