Store or sell Citroen C5 Mk1 HDI Estate?

Post by howiedean »

Hello,
I recently listed my Citroen C5 Estate Mk1 HDI estate in the sale or wants.

http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... highlight=

I'm moving to the States for a couple of years and have an option of storing the C5 in a secure compound (family caravan storage compound) although it will be outside. My father can look after it by making sure it is run regularly and driven around the compound to use the brakes.
Should I consider this option or just flog it and buy another car when I return?

The car will probably need to have the cam belt, water pump and pulleys done on my return and I guess the spheres and hyd fluid would also be due after a lay up (it will be nearly 10 years old). I quite like the car as I know what it is like and being the last C5 with the 110BHP HDI it doesn’t have all the particulate filters and issues to go wrong!

It will be listed on E-bay soon If I decide to sell, I fly on the 12th Sept.

Any thoughts greatly accepted.

Regards

Sell. By the time you come back the car has dropped drastically in value. You still have the money to spend on it. A bird in the hand etc.

That is the sensible thing .........but if you are an enthuisiast........

I think Lexi has nailed it - it isn't going to improve any in an open field and running the engine for short periods at idle isn't going to help much.

Sell it!

What's a C5 estate going to be worth in a couple of years? :eh:

Well it's value is already pretty close to the bottom of the depreciation curve, so while you would loose some money it wouldn't be that much. Storage costs are likely to cost more than you would lose unless of course you are getting it for free.

So on balance sell it, in a couple of years you will be able to get a ten year old Mk11 for the same money ( if you save the money in a non depreciating asset such as gold) and although that will have a FAP they arn't such a big deal as everybody makes out.

If you like the car and its a good one then keep it, there isnt really much value to be lost on C5Is now. If you feel a change or that it will deteriorate in the two years then sell it on.

My view: sell unless it's a classic.

Cachaciero mentioned gold. I'd go along with this (although sourcing gold or silver in Britain without middle men rip offs is difficult). So if an ounce of gold is currently just over £1000 (USD1750) then what's the car worth? 3 ounces of gold? Gold is dipping again on the back of rumours surrounding US quantitative easing, but some say gold will reach USD2500 within a few years as uncertainty re our denial over debt trading continues.

Besides that, who knows what might happen to the car in a few years: theft, accidental damage, wind blowing trees onto it, meteorite strike , martial law and asset stripping.

I'd get rid personally.

Anyone know of any decent gold suppliers?

Thanks for the replies gents. I think I'll try and get rid of the car prior to going to the States.
Its a shame to give up a good car, I suppose if it could have been dry stored it might have been worth keeping.
It will be on E-bay shortly.

Howie
