AbS braking system.

Post by KennyW »

Hi all,

Query, I am try to figure out what make of braking system is fitted to my Xantia.

According to citroen services it is a Bosch but on inspection it appears to be bendex front calipers.

What is the difference between both and the outer CV joints.

Bendix is Bosch usually, Girling is Lucas.

I don't understand your CV joint question. The outer and inner joints are different naturally. By "both" they would mean either both outers or both inners or possibly one side (ie: 1x inner and 1x outer) , but if you're going to buy 1x inner and 1x outer you may as well buy an exchange driveshaft and save a lot of mess / work for probably not much more money (if you shop around) :)

Bosch brakes only fitted to 2.1TD / HDi 110 / V6 / Later Activas - used the 288mm discs. Most are Bendix, fitted with 283mm discs. ABS sensors are the same across all models BUT MK1 and MK2 are different (MK1 80mm OD, MK2 90mm OD). I think there's only 1 ABS system for MK2 cars. Check the OD of the ring on the joint you have fitted to see what size it is

Okay guys thanks for the replies,

Here is the problem the Bendix has a different no of notches on the ABS ring compared to the bosch ABS ring. Hence this could explain the problem with my light on for the ABS.

I am going to count the number of notches on the ABS rings fitted ie offside compared to nearside since I change one of them.

Hope this makes sense know.

i would think if you look at the ABS ECU forward of the hydraulic tank, it should say Bosch,Teves?, or even Bendix?,

All MK2s use the same rings with the same number of teeth - I think the smaller, MK1 rings have fewer teeth. Check the size and all will be revealed 8-)

I thought that the early Xantias got fitted with Teves Mk4 ABS up until jan 1998 when Citroen changed to the later version Teves Mk20.
Teves systems have the ECU mounted on the ABS valve block and are recognise by being marked ATE.
When the Xantia Mk1 was in production Citroen were using 3 different suppliers design of ABS. Bendix (last knockings), Teves and Bosch Mk5.
As far as I know the XM was the last Citroen to get Bendix ABS. As a system it can be recognised by an ECU in the main box totally seperate from the ABS valve block.
The ABS and the brake calipers can be made by different manufacturers.
Citroen regularly used a mix of these so identifying caliper type proves nothing about ABS type.

Thanks for the replies,

Will have to wait until SWMBO returns from work to check.

Will check ring teeth and size on CV and try and find name on ABS ECU.

Hi guys,

I have found the problem with the ABS sensor, the ABS ring on the new CV joint is smaller than the old one.

Does anybody have the diameter of the ABS ring which should fitted to mine.

Details below

Hi Richard,

I'm going to speak to the company i bought the Cv joint from and ask them to compare to 2 CV's they have which are supposed to fit my xantia.

One is marked as a bendix make and the other is marked as Bosch make.

Other wise can the abs sensors be change to match the CV :?:

Thanks for the replies and Malcolm,

As earlier mentioned in the thread my Xantia is fitted with the Teves MK20 system.

www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk are sending the correct one (Bosch)and taking the Bendix one back for no extra cost.

They were extremely helpful and I would recommend them to anyone looking for cv joints.

Hopefully this is the end of my saga.

For your info the ABS ring O/D is 99mm for my xantia, the earlier models were 90mm.

Fixed :)

Company delivered new CV and took the other away.

Correct CV fitted and light disappeared after short drive.
