1st MOT Failed

Post by hdi_man »

well MORE problems....

2008 C5 hdi exclusive, 32k miles.

into dealer for basic service & MOT, just got call....failed MOT and £870 to fix everything...

- new rear discs & pads
- suspension droplinks
- front ball joint

told them NO way and just paid £140 for basic service & MOT fee. they will re-test for free within 10 days.....no I just need to fix the stuff !!! :?

I'm tempted to get it all done and sell it....or just trade it ASAP.

honestly Citroen aren't building these cars properly - its a piece of crap

Thats steep have you checked the price of parts from GSF europarts or a motor factors parts should'nt be more than £200.
3 hours labour at the most £90 per hour surely.
Where abouts are you.

I'm sure there are forum members here would help to repair for beer tokens
and tea and biccies.
If your close enough I will.

Why does this car need new rear discs and pads on 32K miles? That is hardly any mileage for an item that gets very light use.

Equally, if it were mine, I'd complain to Citroen over the mileage that the worn compenents have done.

You will probably find an indy workshop would charge considerably less than £870 for these parts that are very easy to fit.

Whereabouts are you as we could probably recommend a decent garage to do the repairs?

I'm in Glasgow.

no idea why it need rear pads but they are metal to metal and making a noise when I brake.

I put it down to the fact the car is too heavy and they are using parts from probably a C4 !!!

If I caught the train there and back I could still make a tidy profit on what they want to charge.

Get a price from Citroen Services on the Cambuslang Rd. in Rutherglen. I've always found them to be very reasonable in the past. Tony's the guy to ask for.

Not affiliated with them BTW, just a former happy customer.

They're not called main stealers for nothing !!

That quote is absolutely outrageous !!

As mentioned above, 3 hours labour + parts should do it.
Discs and pads probably £100 max for the pair, drop links £15/pair, ball joint £15 max. So, £205-225 max depending on the labour rate.
Even if we were generous with the dealer and allowed for double that, they are still taking a mighty p155, but at almost 4 times it's almost robbery !!

They're wanting to rip you off. Either that or your car has done a lot more miles than you think it has. Could that be possible? Just looked at my maintenance records for my C5 which is on 80000 miles. New rear pads at 40000. Still with original discs on the rear. Has just passed MOT with original droplinks and ball joints.

I'm pretty sure mine is on original droplinks at 145,000.
Balljoints done at around 120,000, £13 each and £25 to fit.
Rear discs done a couple of years ago, £100 inclusive fitting.

are your cars new shape C5's ? I suspect the new ones are not as reliable.

the mileage is genuine as I have full service record. the rear pads are definitely worn through to the metal....maybe its the way I drive ?!?

anyway, local garage is doing all the work for £300 and I will get free MOT re-test at dealers. still more than I expected on a 3 yr old car but thats life !

Hang on a minute, When was the car registered, I'm thinking 3 year warranty here......

Ball joints are notoroius for failing on the C6, due to the rubbish (read what you will) design, I'd be really tempted to badger Citroen UK on those along with the drop links.

Rear discs and pads   JEEZ, some of the dealers are offering to replace these for £215, here is the link

Its a shame you dont want to or cant do the job as you would only be paying about £150 tops.

you reckon £150 for parts and then DIY ? I could do it I suppose...I thought £300 was not bad as I called a few places. I'll get another few quotes
