The rubber bush connecting the P/S ram to the steering rack has perished, Citroen apparently only sell the complete ram at $1250NZD + GST (15%). Needless to say, the heart just about stopped when that was said to me!

Questions I have are, can the end of the ram (as in the bush part) be unscrewed from the rest of the assembly or is it a fixed unit?

If this is the case, are the bushes/end fittings the same thru the Xantia range?

Said vehicle is a 2000 Xantia V6

if you mean the bush at the moveing end of thr ram UK N/S=left side end when sitting in a RHD car,

the bush is avalible on its own as i have recently bought and fitted one to a BX, and it crossed over to a XANT part,

although fitting this bush did not fix the fault which was the end of the ram was touching the N/S suspension arm as the steering was turned to the right,

i ended up placeing two shim washers between the rack mountting points and sub frame, which liftted the rack slightly,

if you send me the last 8 digits of your chassis/VIN No. i will check the price and part No. on service citroen for the correct one to fit your car,

Now onto the other harrowing question; Can it be fitted in place or does the front of the car need to be torn apart?

Think we're talking bout the same thing... Left hand side of Steering Ram, at the end of the nice shiny rod (my boot has long gone)

My issue is the testing officer for the WOF (guess its like your MOT) doesn't like the clunk that the steering makes when swinging wheel back and forth... Why you'd do that on a road mystifies me tho :P

Looks like the rubber has just perished

if you look in/under through the pasangers side wheel arch and to tyhe rear of the wheel, you might see the ram end is rubbing the arm as it pass's when you lock the steering round,

i thought that bush had failed but on closer inspection the bush was fine,

this is why i raised the rack on shim washers very slightly, an1/8th of an inch was to much, even though it worked and passed the MOT,

Timmo is talking about the flexi coupling disc at the bottom of the steering columb,

this is not the same thing,
