What's the buzz?

Post by mark_l »

In my C5 II 2.0 2006 Petrol almost every morning after a relatively long-term parking within 2-3 seconds after launch from under the hood I hear the metal sound.
I thought that it is starter's gear seizing problem.
But when hood is open, the impression is, that the sound is coming from the area of the valve box.
When intervals between starts is less than 6-8 hours nothing happen.
Any idea what it may be?
Thanks ahead.

Hi again!
Is there any way to check oil pump functioning (pressure+flow) on working engine?
I suppose, that a\m noises appear because of pump insufficiency.
Thanks ahead :D

The oil is too thin and drains out of the hydraulic lifters while sitting overnight.
Well-used oil thins out, especially the downmarket ones.
Change the filter and oil for a 10W-40 or even 15W-40.
The oil pump is inside the works and impossible to reach.

Thank You, Clogzz!
It's possible to hear it here between 10-th and 11-th second:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8OWL9 ... OGE4&hl=ru

I replaced the oil before 17000 km and intended to replace it again at 20000, when they recommend 30 000 km.
I always purchace oil and spares in dealer's store....
U-f-f-f-f!
Shortly-next weekend I replace the oil (& timing).
To be reported.
Thanks again!!!

OK, oil changed to new (still synthetic 5W40).
No this noise at start.
Generally-engine runs much more silently.
One cum slaps slightly, not seems serious, but a little sad.
How they recommend oil replacement @ 30 KKm? :?:

The 30 kkm interval is peddler’s spin Image and has since been reduced to 20 kkm.
It says that it’s for normal driving conditions with their own recommended oil.
Most driving is in harsh conditions, where the interval is halved.
One hydraulic lifter may have a slight leak, or small dirt in it.
Synthetic oil cleans well, it may come good in time.

The 5W40 oil is very thin and suitable for places where it freezes at night in winter, so how hot is it in your patch ?
Citroen recommends a 15W50 for the Gulf States and some Pacific Islands.
They’ve lumped Australia into the 10W40 zone, but I use a mineral 15W40 because our patch has temperatures of mostly 7 to 30°C.

Thanks, Clogzz!
I hope it's one lifter -I count appr. 3 slaps per second on idle.
Anyway-have I consider it as serious damage? If I remember good small gap was normal on engines without hydraulic compensation.
We have appr. same temperature range: 5 to 35-40 deg C.
I was wondered that official Citroen dealer use this synthetic 5W40, but...
Shortly-it seems next time I"ll switch to oil like like you. I have check-synthetic or mineral.
BTW. Before some time I found that timing belt first replace-after 100 KKm?
Seems too much-no?
:?
Thanks again! :D

Hi Mark,

Hydraulic lifters have no gap at all, they adjust for no gap by filling with oil.
There’s no damage if it still quietens after a few seconds from cold.
Sludge in a lifter can cause slow fill or leakage and usually clears with clean oil.

I used to adjust hydraulic lifters while idling, back when engines were sitting straight and kept the oil in with the then rocker cover off.
There’s a way to pre-adjust lifters with the engine stopped, but the recipe will have to come from a workshop manual.
I did something like no gap plus half a turn to screw down on those ancient engines.

Dealers everywhere often use 5W40 because it’s Citroen’s expensive synthetic ‘does-it-all’ oil, without considering cheaper oils in warm climates.
An upmarket mineral 15W40 or 15W50 to change every 7 to 10 kkm is more than good enough.
Cheap oils thin out faster and are good for at most 7 kkm.

The timing belt replacement is at 120 kkm on the four cylinder petrol engines … I think. :?

Thank You, Clogzz!
It slaps also on hot engine, I"ll check it after 1000 km.
Here guys tell about 100 KMiles between timing belt changing!
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/ ... tm?t=37862
Hope, I have enough.
It is pretty warm here, but the car "lives" under hood and most of km done on suburban roads.

I look on last C5 more and more, they promice to return supply it in December.
Do you have supply iterrupt because of tsunami?
:D

Hi Mark,

I hope that the noise will soon quieten; otherwise one of the lifters will need replacing.
The old lifters could be opened and cleaned, probably not now anymore.
The 100,000 miles interval is for diesel engines, maybe because they’re running cooler and slower.

I’ve taken off all engine room covers, except for the one on the fuse box.
The most dangerous one is on top of the ignition coils because it encloses them in the hottest place on the engine.
In summer I don’t use ethanol fuel because the engine gets noticeably hotter with it.

No lack of new C5’s because of the tsunami, the cars coming here were made before and may have nothing from Japan in them.

You are right indeed-I have read more carefully.

Covers?-I was puzzled too: what it need for? And did not find any reason except "esthetics" and reducing some gramms of dust on engine. :?

My dealer tells me that there are not gears from Japan, so there are not C5's and Pegout's. I did not check it.
