Fuel gauge problem

Fuel gauge problem

Hi all,

Query, my fuel gauge is working and then not. :?

What could be the likely causes :?:

I'm going to check the wiring in case it is fault or the gauge itself.

Hoping to get a friends garage at the weekend to do some of the other jobs so advice please.

Had a similar problem with my HDi, gauge was very erratic, sometimes thumping the top of the dash would get it to behave itself for a bit. I concluded the problem was in the instrument pod itself. Eventually got round to changing it for a pod from another car - its worked fine since.

I can tell you EXACTLY what it is after my own experiances!!

Dont even BOTHER wasting time with wiring!! Or even the tank sender!!

Remove the instrument panel clocks, and open them up!

Then behind the speedo face is a small cuircuit board mounted there.. it IS this little board at fault..

What Haynes FAIL to show is that the Tank sender is NOT directly connected to the guage... it has to go through this small cuicuit to conver and process the signal for the guage!! Imagine what your fuel guage would be like going round corners... up / down /up /down...

So this IS what your problem will be!!

Did you repair this circuit board Paul or just swap it for a known good one?

Whether the instrument panel at fault will depend the source of the fault, for instance when I bought the Activa that Jim now has, after starting the gauge would slowly descend to the bottom as if the car was doing single figures MPG. The cause was the fuel tank sender unit.

No I didn't, and dont ask me were it is now! :lol:

Ive a good few in Mk.1 instrument panels hence the no need to repair it..

Ahh, in that case then, the most likely problem is a dry joint on the circuit board :)

I haven't tried the 'thump the dash board' fix will try tomorrow :wink:

I'm pretty sure Clogzz those are the pins that need to be soldered to fix the speedo sticking at 50 problem.... :?

I’ve lost the ‘proper’ one and mistook this one for it. :oops:
