Citroen says to use only the very special Image LT71141 oil in the AL4.
Renault has the same box, called DPO, and says to use Dexron III. Image

I got a 2004 C5 auto recently with the AL4 box. Gear changes were a bit harsh, quite erratic when cold.. I did a double flush of the oil, transformed the car to be quite honest, and it had only done 30k miles when I collected it. Now, although it is still a bit harsh for the first minute or two when cold, it quickly settles down.

I will be doing a yearly double flush now, to keep the oil as clean as possible, £60 well spent!
