Something's finally gone wrong on my Xantia

Post by gadgetgricey »

After almost two years of totally trouble free motoring, something has broken today.

Image

Seemed to have been sounding a little louder over the past couple of days, but just went up the motorway a couple of junctions and I think that finished it off.

Do you think it could be repaired/welded as it looks a clean "break", or are the centre boxs cheap enough new.

Cheers

The metal around the area of the break will be very thin and corroded, welding will probably not be successful or last very long.
A new section isn't that expensive from a factor or similar, don't bother with a dealer, you'll scare yourself !
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

Scrap it :D

It's not worth welding exhausts I have done it a number of times and it hasn't lasted. As HDI says the metal will have gone thin some distance from the joint.

Dave, presuming this is the 1.9TD, that looks like the cat has had its 9th life.

Take advantage of the death of it and get rid of it. Replace it with a straight-through pipe.

You'll gain a little power and economy as a result.

Yes, should have said its the TD.

Just gone through its MOT, so would not be an issue for a while. But there are any emmissions regs or noise regs that require the cat to be in place.

Looks like it might be a free fix then, pay someone to fit the straight through pipe, and then scrap the cat and hopefully get my money back.
Xantia free motoring strikes again.....

On a diesel Dave, none whatsoever :D Cats are not a legal requirement on diesels and are not tested during an MOT. Only smoke density is checked and that's not influenced by the cat at all.

Cats on a diesel do soot up over time and having a straight-through pipe will aid its breathing. Yours was bound to be a bit restrictive after all these years.

Weighing in the old cat is a great way to offset the cost!!!

Had this done on my old Saab 900 Turbo, as it was always acraping on speedbumps. Place fairly local to me in Kingswinford.

Give them a call tomorrow to see if they are open.

Thanks all.

Had a break in exactly the same place on mine. New pipe with cat included was around £45ish from GSF IIRC, that's if you did want to go down the official route of course

look on Bosal's web cataloge below item 10 it shows the straight through pipe you require

http://www.catalogue.bosal.com/pages/ex ... del=Xantia

this pipe fits hatch and estates instead of the cat,
