A blob of grease will provide a temporary 'seal' if needed. Do not remove filter lid and apply it, just smear some around the lid while its fitted and the same around the base.

Ideally the 'final' piece of pipe (the pump inlet) should be a clear tube so you can see exactly the state of the fuel / air. :)

Guys.

Found the leak.

Here is a video on Youtube.

I need advice here on what to replace. Maybe it is just a seal. The diesel appears to be squirting out from behind the round thing. I assume this round thing to be an enrichment device because it only squirts when you rev it quickly.

Now I know why Sylv's car is only getting 36 mpg. I just thought it was running rich. The strange thing is no lack in performance.

That's the timing advance solenoid from what I can see. Although I've not seen one squirt like that lol.

There's just a copper seal behind it if I remember correctly.

Go to the scrapyard. Find a 205 non turbo or a 306 non turbo (ideally pre 97) with a Lucas pump, these have a large blanking plug there instead of the solenoid. Remove it and fit it to your's to replace that 'lump'. The plug is just the right depth to maintain the timing correctly (as underneath its kind of a plate that moves, difficult to describe)

When you unscrew it, a fair bit of fuel will come out, don't panic that's normal. Ensure you clean around the area before unscrewing it, you must not get the slightest trace of dirt inside.

This is what I did many years ago to my 205 to get rid of the advance solenoid, never had any issues without it.

Hi Spider.

So is it the actual 'lump' that's leaking?

And will fitting a blanking plug downgrade performance and therefore efficiency. I know a couple of guys at Lucas so I can perhaps source a replacement lump for a few quid...

The blanking plug (as above ;) should not have any effect.

All that is, is a pin that pushes into the pump to advance the timing slightly, it "only" operates under the following conditions:

Engine cold with waxstat / fast idle cable pulled fully
Acc linkage shut if you touch the pedal more than a mm or two it stops it.

The microswitch only operates when both these conditions are true.

:)

It looks like its coming out of it or the seal, I guess it is possible it could be the pump casing but you should be able to determine where its coming from. You can get a replacement advance solenoid if you wanted one I bet they are not cheap though, my idea was a bypass for it that's all to save you money. :)

It's CURED!

This is unbelievable!

Sylv has had the car for nearly four years now. This solenoid has alway been in the same position or something close to it.

I have been able to hand screw it tight. It allowed me to turn it approx. 180 degrees!!!!!

Leak cured. The strange thing is it has obviously always been loose. But without cable ties holding the wiring I turned it back to its old position and revved it. NO LEAK! I revved it hard a few more times and it began to unscrew itself and started leaking again.

I find it incredible that this solenoid has remained in the same loose position for around 3 years 9 months and suddenly decided to unscrew itself a little more and start leaking.

That was a cheap fix!

Hehe :D

Yes its only screwed in (hence the blanking plug on NA models and those without it anyway)

Well, that was a cheap fix anyway. If it was leaking then it would also take in air there too which would not help your starting / running issues either.
Andy.

That's what I'm guessing. The stupid thing is you just cannot see any diesel coming out.

Sylv is 'over the moon'.
