Terry.. for the sake of a few mins work I would get some lube on the selector joints at the RH back of the engine.. may need to pull the airbox out of the way etc.. I think there are 3 rods, i.e. 6 ends..

can't think what else would cause it...

I had a similar problem to yours about two years ago, with my Mark 2 Xantia. I changed the oil in the gearbox & have had no problems since. Drain completely and refill.

What sort of squeak and when?

Just as the lever is moved, or as the clutch is re-engaged. Does it do it with the engine on and off, does it do it if you just change gear when stationary?

Xantia gearbox squeak

Post by froggy »

It"s when you move the gear lever, it sqeaks with engine runnnig or switched off. only moving from 3 to 4 or 4 to 5, never 1to 2 or 3 to 4 .
thanks for your help.

The only real way is to carefully disengage the rod balljoints, being incredibly careful not to stress the rubber mounted ones, clean the balls and ballcups thoroughly and smear on a the tiniest film of normal grease on the balls and reassemble. If you use too much grease you'll not get the ballcups back on as they will hydraulically lock.

The balljoints themselves near the gearbox may not be the problem. There's bellcranks under the gearstick itself and it's likely these are dry and squeaking. Also there's a pivot on the subframe and a big hollow rubber ball on the subframe pivot that could conceivably squeak. That would need lubricating with rubber grease or silicone spray.

To really determine the cause, jack up and support the car and then climb under and listen carefully whilst someone else wiggles the gearstick.
