They are actually a quite substantial hydraulic cylinder that uses water pressure to extend them, if the jets have gone walkies which can happen or the shaft has a spit in it, which can happen if the bumper has been pulled of with out first removing the square plastic covers then they won't pop out but the back of the bumper can get a good wash :-)

Oh! and a replacement is eye watering cost.
Please don't ask how I know this.

To operate the headlamp washers you need the headlamps on dip or main beam.

With the lights on just operate the windscreen wash and the headlamp washers should pop out like 007 machine guns.

There are two pumps on the washer bottle under the front bumper on the driver's side, one pump for winscreen and one pump for headlamp washers. If your headlamp washers don't work you may have a faulty headlamp washer pump on your washer bottle.

Thanks for all the advice. I have now confirmed that my washer jets don't work: there is no feed to the motor. The motor and the jets do in fact work (tested by direct connection to battery. So the problem is in the feed.

I have tried to find a specific fuse for the headlamp washer motor in the washer bottle but cannot find one. The feed to the motor for the windscreen washers does work normally.

So I guess that there is either a break in the wire somewhere along the way, or the switch on the steering column must have been changed at some point, being replaced by an incorrect one, or perhaps the headlamp washer jets need to be enabled with lexia.

Is there anyone with a wiring diagram for the circuit feeding the headlamp washer motor plse? where does the loom go after it goes in towards the engine compartment from the wing?

Any help/advice will be appreciated..

Many thanks

Pretty sure that the pump is driven from a relay in the BSI needs the headlights on plus washer switch made its the same switch for screen wash.
Pretty sure the pump is on it's own fuse which at the moment not being close to any data I guess will be on the fuse panel on the passengers side.
I believe that the car has to be configured (Lexia) for HID I would imagine that would take care of the washers at the same time so in your case it should all be there.

The fuse for the headlamp washers is fuse 7 in the BSM.

The BSM is under the bonnet on the passenger side by the bulkhead. It's under the black plastic covers and has several fuses, some multi plugs and relays.
