C5 2006 2.0 HDI (136bhp) EGR valve failure

Post by fred1 »

Hi,
Have had slight hesitation when accelerating and slight @hunting@ when on cruise control at low load.

Have cleaned MAF, put in injector cleaner and twoc stroke oil but wa left with residual symptoms - was suspecting EGR as turbo pressure etc looked ok on lexia (recorded in test drive). But from EGR position records the valve seemed to be moving.

Checked relay and electrovalve actuation (lexia) and adequate vacuum(gauge). All looked ok.

Tonight I got a depollution fault message when driving home but performance actually seemed better !!!!

On checking with lexia the fault was a faulty EGR valve and on checking parameters with engine running it as clear that no EGR movement was being detected.

Again checking relay and electrovalve operation seemed ok - strong clicks.

I assume therefore that the EGR has seized mechanically.

1) Any other suggestions ??

2) Anyone any experience of taking off the EGR on this model ?

It looks quite messy to get at.

3) Has any one stripped and cleaned an EGR (is it possible)?

4) If I decide to run without an EGR do I need to do anything?
Can I make any changes with lexia to prevent fault coming up ?

Thanks in advance

Have a little hunt around as there are various recent threads discussing the clogged EGR phenomenon.

Recommended is EGR3 spray, available from GSF and other vendors.

Several cans/treatments may be required depending on how fouled up the EGR and associated pipework is.

Worth removing and checking/cleaning the small vacuum piles associated with the EGR and boost valve operation as these becoming clogged can have a detrimental effect and as they are narrow they clog easier than the wider pipes/tubes.

EGR3 is more for cleaning out the inlet tract / head ports of all the crud that builds up with an EGR system. There are other products which are aimed more at removing the harder coking around the EGR valve though I have no experience of them. Wheeler refered to a product from Wynns which had a long injector pipe for spraying back to the valve said he would come back with more details but I don't recall him doing so.

Well had a look at my EGR spray, it is indeed EGR3 but it came with a normal nozzle + a long reach nozzle. It is desinged to glean the EGR valve & inlet track with the engine running & still on the car.

I've been shortchanged again! I didn't get a long pipe with my two cans :-(

Me neither. That extension looks really useful.

That long pipe looks like it would pretty well feed all the way down to the EGR valve. Just spraying in EGR3 into the inlet manifold as per the instructions none is ever going to get to the actual valve.
Actually I don't recall anything in the instructions about injecting directly onto the EGR valve or the gas duct from it to the manifold. It was for this reason that I thought Wheeler had a different product. That coupled with a belief that it would require two different products to remove the relatively soft carbon / oily sh*t that clogs up the inlet tract and the much harder baked on carbon that I would expect to find around the EGR valve itself.

Thanks for the replies.

I have decided to replace the EGR (new one on ebay for £130) and apply some EGR3 to the system !!

Will then have a look at cleaning/refurbing the old EGR at leisure.
