I guess my seeming indecisiveness and contrariness is born of the fact that pos-BX I'm in unknown territory except for my limited experience of XMs.

My trusted friend Phil Boxall as well as Dennis, my tame specialist suggested I lean towards pre-HDi. I have no issues with the 19TD as I enjoyed its flexibility in the ZX Volacane we had... The C5 (briefly) attracted me (but being me - never say never lol!), but I have to admit... I can't get over the styling and the question mark over the C5's reputation generally. A Xantia's pretty I think (if not particularly inspiring) but a C5 is, well...

I will continue to be annoyingly fickle, I'm sure, but whatever I choose in the end it'll be an education; new territory!

Xantia HDi 110 Exclusive estate.

simply the best car i've ever had and on a run to the lake district and back including driving around it for a few days averaged 61.2mpg.

my 1.9TD just couldnt get close to that kind of figure.

Mine has just gone over 180k and i've had it for 30k, all that i've had to do aside from servicing it is change the MAF which took 5 mins.

excellent excellent car and by far the most practical car i've ever owned (packs a fair ol punch too)

I HAVE to agree the HDi 8v 110bhp IS the Best HDi of the LOT... WITH A tuning box its even better.

Rarely give problems, I too have 178k on my Exclusive Hatch and all Ive done is change oil. Of course they do have problems what DONT, but with 80 to 85mph every where, and average of 42mpg.. the TD will NEVER, and I dont care how many people reckon they do, never get near that...

The body is simply too heavy for the TD to carry efficiently, despite the petrol type performance its simply not the same drive.

Blimey, HDi does sound a convincing package...

I still haven't made up my mind (I could equally end up with another XM - or a Saab  ) but thanks again to all who have posted here. It is reassuring. (Especially if one day I get an HDi and something goes wrong only kidding! :) )

I've got agree with the endorsement of HDi 110's, I'm on my second Exclusive estate and simply love them, roomy, refined, reasonable performance and great economy (I feel hard done by if I ever get less than 50 mpg) a great advance over TD in every department and without the hassle of multiplex wiring. My last one had done 150,000 miles when I sold it and it was still going strong, my present one is relatively youthful at 56k miles.

At present I can't think of any other car that can fulfil the same role for similar running costs, market value or comfort.

Cassy does 42mpg most of the time.
Cost wise that's equivalent to over 70mpg in a hdi, which of course hdi's can't manage.

It has to be a HDi if your wanting economy, the 1.9TD seems pretty low for fuel economy, you could well get a 1.8 or 2.0 and enjoy a fresher car with not drastically less MPG.

HDi every time, unless your going to run it on veg of course.

None of the range beats the economy of a 1.9TD (although a bosch converted 2.1TD should, but they don't come as standard).
As I've said, a HDI would have to do something like 70mpg to beat Cassy's economy.
If you look at Nigel's TD, then a hdi would have to do a hell of a lot more than 70mpg to beat his economy.

The best i've had out of a 1.9TD was 58mpg. At today's prices a HDI would have to return over 83mpg to beat that economy.

But a TD is as slow as a slug and flat as a pancake unless the engine is doing at least 1800 rpm and even after that its gearing is so short you're forever having to swap cog's. Economy isn't everything, it has to balanced with flexibility and performance which makes the additional cost of the HDi over running a TD on veg money well spent.

In order to make a TD more 'economical' than an HDi there's the hassle of having to go to Costco to buy the veg oil which for me is a 40 mile round trip and the cost of £25 yearly membership to factor in, clearly this makes the TD more expensive to run.

Even what ever you say Xac.. Its HDi for me..

Richard, I think there's something wrong with your TD if you think they're slow.
Similarly with changing gears, I rarely need to do that.
You don't have to go to Costco, there's Makro and not forgettting most large towns etc have a cash and carry.
Of course you could even get it delivered, or have WVO delivered and have an even more economical car.
Even with the membership (must renew mine this month!) and the 40 mile round trip you're still saving money. The saving from just 60L pays for the membership.

The 110HDI will get you further per gallon, but not per £1

Still O/T in a way- how problematical is it to change from EPIC to Bosch on a 2.1 TD?
