Xantia coolant bleed cap plug thing? - 540402 valve plug

Post by romie »

Hey, anyone know if the little bleed cap that goes on a Xantia 1.9TD coolant system is only a genuine Citroen part or can I get them nice and cheap (and more conveniently), somewhere else?

Xantia, coolant system, bleed point in engine bay, cap sits on top.

Looks exactly like a schrader valve cap like you have on your car tyre valves. You know the little black plastic caps.

But this one has a rubber bit inside to make a good seal.

Guess what, Citroen said it's not sold separately and it looks like you have to buy a load of pipework to go with it!! B/

Then he mentioned that he thinks he know's what am on about and said he has a bucket of em with part No. 540402 and is described as a valve plug. And would cost me £0.50 each!!

Well they're quite a distance away and would like to source say 10 of em online. . so any ideas where?

It is more or less a valve cap with a rubber seal in it.

You might find the seal is the same (not sure!) as the one in a ZX / 306 / 205 heater hose, the plastic 'screw' type not the valve type, as this has a tiny seal fitted too, it might stay in the pipe but can be pulled out.

Usually with your problem its the complete pipe assembly, I know what you mean its the t-piece section. Normal cause of replacement though is when someone leans on it and it snaps off.

I'd suggest scrapyard to find one if practical.
Andy.

PSA do list exactly the wheel valve cap as also a water circuit screw cap - it's on the turbo models...

An aircraft engineer told me years ago that a proper tyre valve cap has a rubber seal.
The cap’s purpose is to keep the air in, while the valve’s seal is to allow pumping.
