Diesel catalysts
I'm confused. When I was underneath today, I noticed corrosion on my exhaust box - not enough to need replacement, but it got me thinking about replacement costs.
Looking on the net, most suppliers list the Xantia TD as having a catalyst, but I wouldn't have expected my 1993 car to have one, and I can't see one on the pipe.
Not fitted to diesels are they?

Later diesels including the Xantia were fitted with cats.
Cassy had one when I first got her.
When it came time to replace that pipe, I just picked a cat less one from an earlier model.
Was something like £35 plus postage, from online automotive.
It's not a legal requirement for diesels, so definitely get the catless pipe.

I have a wee question about whether you need a cat or not, my son has a 2005 Puegeot 406 110 hdi which needed an exhaust system and the garage told him that it had to have a cat, I have a 2000 Xantia 110 hdi and have been told that I dont need one can someone clarify this for me please.

No MOT requirement (yet) for diesels to retain their catalysts. If the 406 is fitted with a FAP however, then removing it is a bit more involved then just chopping the cat out a la earlier cars.... Possible though that there is no de-cat pipe for a 406, but a few minutes with angle grinder and MIG should see to that if you can get a straight pipe of the right diameter

DERVs - certainly earlyer ones, in the 8v HDi houses do NOT need a Cat, My 1999 V reg HDi is De-cat-ed.. and the emmisions - well - smoke test was stunningly low...
Mines had the "Mig and straight pipe" job done to it also... you can tell, the "Added" pipe has rusted much quicker then the rest of the pipe...
