I'm not really a fan of spraying things into my car which the engine wasn't designed to have sprayed into it.

I'd be happier disabling the EGR altogether, or removing it before cleaning it.

The product is mentioned during the at-length discussion here.

It's for cleaning the valve while it's on the car. It comes with a big long tube for getting right into the air intake

Would respectfully take issue with wheeler here.

Wynns EGR3 cleaner does not come with a long spout and purports to be for cleaning the inlet tract and inlet valves of all the crap build up that occurs with an EGR system.
You disconnect the hose from the turbo to the inlet manifold and spray it in with the engine running at round about 1500 revs.
How well it works is difficult to say without stripping the manifold and swirl valve block to see how much gunk there is.
I have injected one of the two cans I purchased and it does seem to me that there has been a slight improvement in fuel consumption and general smoothness, but it is so slight that it may be wishful thinking :-)
Need to inject the second can because I am sure that the amount of crud in my engine after a 100k would demand more than one can :-)

Now I do wonder if wheeler is thinking of another product which de-cokes the EGR valve itself would be interested to know what that was ?

I've used EGR3, In fact, I've recently sprayed 4 cans altogether directly into my inlet manifold on 4 seperate occasions.

The results appear to be impressive.

My C5 2.2 Hdi manual has done 145k miles and had always returned 36 mpg, or less quite often, no matter how driven. The performance had always been lethargic.

But, since applying 4 cans of EGR3 the car is transformed. It now pulls very strongly in all gears and I'm repeatedly getting 40mpg plus. 44 mpg at one stage and thats average over a tank of diesel.

I got a tuning box some years ago but it didn't appear to make any difference, maybe just a slight improvement. Now, without the tuning box and after the EGR3 the car drives better than it ever has.

I'm assuming that my inlet manifold and inlet valves must have been very dirty and the EGR3 spray has probably restored the airways to help the engine breath as it was designed.

A friend of mine with a C5 2.2 Hdi said many a time how good his engine was quote 'enough torque to pull you up the side of a house'. I never got that feeling, but I do now.

edit: I got all my 4 cans from GSF and none of them included a long extension pipe.
Cheers, Kev

My can of EGR3 is also without an extension tube; just a trumpet type nozzle reminiscent of the type found on insecticide cans for dealing with wasp nests at a safe distance.

I also found a slight improvement which now seems to have gone. Was it all imagination or has the EGR valve stuck open again?

The stuff i'm talking about is made by wynns, its an aerosol can & is for cleaning the EGR valve itself (i assumed thats what we were talking about ?) It is sprayed into the air intake while the engine is running but can also be sprayed directly onto the valve itself if off the engine. It comes with a normal spray nozzle + a big long flexible tube nozzle for getting into hard to reach places. It's like the tubes you get with some A/C cleaning sprays for spraying down heater vents. Will check out the exact name of it when i get back home which wont be till monday.

Second can went in today.
Interestingly the EGR gets blamed for all the clagging up but I suspect that the fact that the engine breathers get stuck into the inlet as well as a certain amount of oil blowing past the turbo seals probably contribute a fair amount as well.

I have a can of this stuff and started using it a few months ago, the knocking that came from my engine whilst squirting just a tiny bit into the intake manifold scared me into leaving it alone. I'm told somewhere else this is normal as it is burning the cack off!

That knocking sound you heard is indeed normal. Instructions on the can say to stop spraying if knocking occurs, it takes a couple of seconds to calm down back to normal. I sprayed a can of Wynns EGR3 into the inlet manifold and pipe going to the EGR valve this weekend. I'm astonished by the difference its made. Fuel economy has gone up 3mpg almost immediately and the cars performance has been transformed. It picks up quicker and is just generally a smoother drive all round. I'm impressed, very impressed. =D>
